Windows Update service missing; Antivirus applications fail to install

    Hi Folks,

I'd like to share my system issues with you however before that I need to apologize for three specific things:
    • Sorry if the post title doesn't correspond to the norms

    • Sorry if the post already exists elsewhere / in a different forum / with a different title; I couldn't find a specific solution to address my issue

    • Sorry if the post is too long and way in descriptive

My machine has been working fine for almost two years now, no hardware issues, clean from viruses and malware (or so I'd like to think) until recently it got terribly slow all of the sudden, would take almost about 35-40 minutes to boot as opposed to 40 seconds on an average. My first bet was a system restore can fix this in minutes so I booted in safe mode with command prompt. I realized a specific file (relative to AVG) took an unusual 20+ minutes to load. Since I had recently upgraded to the 2012 version, I thought of rolling it back. Also, while I was at it, I also found that there were no restore points for me to roll back to. Now that is pretty odd since I create a restore point every fortnight manually. Anyways, I thought reinstalling AVG would fix my issue. AVG uninstalled but the problem persisted.

Following which, I thought lets run the dell diagnostics to resolve the issue. Thats where I found the second issue. The system beeped up during the HDD test reporting error 2000-0142; looked up the error description and resolution and CHKDSK saved the day for that one.

When I booted the machine normally after the scan, the first thing I wanted to do is load AVG back again... (been using it for quite some time now... without complaints). Installed AVG but could not get resident shield to turn on. Windows Action Center kept complaining but could not help fix the issue. It also kept prompting that windows update is not active and thats when I realized windows update service was missing from the service list.

I looked up all possible solutions over the web but could not fix the issue. Multiple reboots, different AV applications nothing works. Tried microsoft fixit as well, all in vain. Until Monday, I could update Windows defender but now it says it cant update since the service isnt running. It is on and active though.

I request all to help me resolve this issue, I dont really want to clean format my machine. Thanks in advance.

Any Solutions to this problem? I have the exact same problem. windows fix it hasn't helped, sfc scannow has found nothing. I have searched the web to no avail and tried everything suggested and still nothing.

My windows update is not found along with firewall and defender missing.
