Windows 7: Looking for Good Encryption Software

Looking for Good Encryption Software

Hello,

I recentlly purchased a Server. It will either be accessed by myself directly or via Remote Desktop (From LogMeIn.Com) to set up a client. I would like to encrypt the entire comptuer and everything on it so that the data cannot be stolen as it will contain quite sensitive data. I do not wish to deploy the encryption to other computers or anything because no other comptuers are using it as a server just accessing it to set it up and work on it.

I looked into McAfee total Data Protection but they only offer a minimum of 11 license purchases which is quite expensive. I only need it to encrypt everything on the ONE comptuer and make sure it is really secure.

I am looking for something quite affordable and perferably under $100.00. Any reccomendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi,

Is it using Windows 7 Ultimate? If so, you can use the in-built BitLocker:
BitLocker Drive Encryption - Internal Data Hard Drives - Turn On or Off

If not, I recommend trying TrueCrypt - it is free, but highly regarded.

Golden

Hi,

All encryption software is difficult, especially if you consider the entire disk. If your sensitive data is contained in specific folders, then encrupting the data folders is good enough, and far, far easier.

I'd encourage you to perform a test on some backed-up data. Its far easier than you might imagine. I'm actually writing a tutorial on TrueCrypt at the minute, but haven't found time to finish it off yet. If you can wait a week or so, I'll see if I can finish it for you, and then post back here.

Regards,
Golden

I think you will find that Truecrypt is not actually that difficult to use and as far as I am concerned is very reliable. I do not employ full disk encryption but it appears to be as reliable as partition and container encryption, both of which I have used. I would recommend getting some decent cloning software so that complete back-ups of either disks or partitions can be made. It is easy with containers of course but it can also be the same for partitions and disks with cloning although it might take much longer. My experiences with Truecrypt have been quite positive and I have never needed to go to the forum for any problems - as yet! As suggested it would be best to set up a dummy system and play with this until you are entirely confident - this is an area where mistakes are extremely costly!!!
