Avira webguard conflicting with Windows 7 firewall

    Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help me with this matter.

Ive noticed that Avira's webguard conflicts with windows 7 firewall, i tested this by making a new outbound rule and blocking 'internet explorer'. When i opened explorer it still connected to the internet, however as soon as i turned off webguard the connection was blocked.

Is there a way around this?
    change settings in windows firewall?
I assume its something to do with avira using a proxy?

    Thanks guys!

Turn off 7 firewall? It doesn't seem like you need it, you have another firewall.

When you turn on Avira's Web Restore, all browser traffic goes in and out thru "avwebgrd.exe".

    with web restore off

    with web restore on

Thanks :). this is very helpful.

So basically with avira's webguard on there is on way to have full control over your firewall?

Ive actually switched now to MSE since they have no webguard/shield utility and windows fw works well with it. How important really is a webguard? providing i'm not some idiot who clicks on every advert i see haha...actually there blocked with adblock.

Whatever you wanted to do to a browser via the firewall, you could do to the avwebgrd app instead. The end result should be the same.

I'm not sure how effective the web guard app is, so I can't say what is being lost my moving away from it.

Many people think that as long as they stay away from questionable websites and don't click on stuff, they are okay. The problem is, there are people breaking into good websites and installing java exploits inside "normal" web pages. So that "normal" website that you have been visiting for years without any problems could one day become the source of a infection. These java exploits can install stuff without causing UAC to warn the user.

A unique ‘fileless’ bot attacks news site visitors - Securelist
"...the exploit uses several different methods to disable UAC (User Account Control). After this the bot can install..."

If you take the time to read thru that link - don't focus on the "fileless" part and don't take comfort in the fact that you block certain info from coming in. The same exploit can be inside the web page main page.

I've cleaned many a computer that was "protected" with MSE and yet I still install it for a variety of reasons. The folks at Microsoft are slow to list things as bad. I make that statement after years of submitting bad files to virustotal and seeing the time lag between other companies and Microsoft. Also, MSE's heuristics could be better.

Let me save you a lot of trouble and head aches. This is what works for me and many others. Microsoft Security Essentials and the built in Windows 7 Firewall.
I also use MAM Pro but had great luck with the free one. I also use Filehippo Update Checker. This little free programs checks for updates of things like Adobe, Java and many other programs that are often missed. All these programs play well together.
