Windows 7: sidebar.exe virus

sidebar.exe virus

This morning the little blue/yellow update windows shield appeared on on my foundation bar and I moved the mouse down to it to see what it was it it was supposedly sidebar.exe looking to gain access to my computer. I was suspicious so I just chose to close it yet it still brought up the pop-up asking me whether I wanted to continue with the processing. It would not take cancel for an answer nor could I load task manager at the time. It then seemed to take the cancel and then a stream of pop-ups appeared saying that windows could not access some partition on my hard disk and then poped up a Windows menu suggesting a scan. I ignored that and attempted to run a Malwarebytes scan, but it ignored my choice. I then just chose to shutdown which it allowed. Booting up I get the same stream of pop-ups complaining about partition access and the popup suggesting a Windows HD scan. Currently, dead in the water. Any help?

Thanks for all the help!!!! Not.
Actually was able to get Malwarebytes to run and that seeming cleared up the virus although it left me with an empty tool bar, the majority of my icons missing, and few programs actually showing in my menu...Happily I was able to revert to a restore point from a couple days ago after which I ran a couple different scans which came up clean and now seem good to go.

Welcome to the forum whatfur. Yours is the first instance of this we have seen, though we were warned last week of the possibility. Glad you got it sorted. Your post may soon help others.
