The most commonly recommended programs on this forum are probably Microsoft Security Essentials and Avast, with Malware Bytes often recommended as a complementary application.
The most recent versions of Norton have a pretty good reputation if you prefer to pay.
McAfee is the one most often NOT recommended.
There are dozens of threads on this topic in the Security section, available via a search. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Ignatz Special; 4 speed manual gearbox; factory air conditioning; one of one OS Windows 7 SP1, Home Premium, 64-bit CPU Intel Sandy Bridge i5-2500, not overclocked Motherboard Gigabyte H67A-UD3H-B3, full ATX Memory 4 GB Crucial DDR3-1333 Graphics Card none; graphics are integrated on CPU Sound Card onboard: Realtek ALC892; external: USB Behringer UF0-202 Monitor(s) Displays NEC 90GX2-BK 19" LCD Screen Resolution 800 x 640 Keyboard Leopold Tenkeyless with Cherry Blue switches, USB Mouse Logitech or Microsoft optical wired; either USB or PS 2 PSU Seasonic SS-560KM, modular Case Antec Solo II Cooling CPU: Scythe Big Shuriken; Case: Scythe Slipstream 800 & 500 Hard Drives System: Intel 320 Series SSD, 80 GB;

For fastest, Avast is a good choice, I'm using it at work, but gives way too many false positives, and is full of advertisements.
The best I know is Kaspersky, I use it at my desktop at home and goes really well, but is quite slow and a resource hog, however it catches may viruses and has a good detection ratio.
MSE is nice because it doesn't has any ads (because it's the only I know that doesn't has a paid version), but lacks in many aspects and is not something I would recommend to anyone. Quite fast too.
Personally, I would choose Kaspersky if you want to afford some money for it. Otherwise stick with the free Avast or Avira. | My System Specs | | Computer type Laptop System Manufacturer/Model Number Toshiba Sattelite A665-S6092 OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64 CPU Intel Core i7-740QM Memory 8 GB DDR3 Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce 330GT Screen Resolution 1366x768 Cooling Coolermaster Notepal U3 notebook cooling pad Hard Drives Samsung 840 SSD 500GB
