svchost.exe is a system file. Modify the firewall settings as described here:

open AVG user interface>double click firewall component>under firewall profile select "directly connected to internet".>click regenerate configuration>click save changes. Now go to tools>firewall settings>under profiles select Directly connected to internet>expand application>find the browsers like for example firefox>select the browser>under application action select "allow for all">click apply>now on the left pane select "Areas and Adapter profiles">mark the option "disable area detection and automatic firewall switch".>click apply and then OK. Now try to connect to net.

You can find details of svchost.exe at A description of Svchost.exe in Windows XP Professional Edition.

And about AVG if you continue to face the same problem of getting disconnected from net even after modifying the firewall settings as described by me above then contact AVG support at AVG | Customer Support | AVG Phone Support.

High amount packet data does not mean any infection.
