login password box not active

I got my hands on a MSI laptop that has a strange problem. It boots up allright but when the screen for password comes it feels like the password box is not active. I can move around the screen with the mouse and use the "S" key to reach the start button in the lower left corner. I can also use the key for changing users but when I try to type in the password field nothing happens.
I have tried to start in fail safe mode but it is the same result. Also checked the drive from the command prompt at the "F8" screen. No problems.
From the same screen I have tried the option to roll bac to the last working ... but it does not help.

For some reason I could type the password yesterday. I have no idea why and how. Again today I'm back with a non active password box.

When I put the mouse pointer in the password box the text "Password" disapears but I can not type. It's like it is out of focus and I can not get it back. Also tried with "Tab" and up/down but can not land in the password box.

Anyone have a clue?

Hiyya and welcome datathomas hum not unusual for the mouse to move around in that screen. What is unusual is that you have the Start button at the admin login screen?

Hello ICit2lol and thank's for quick answer.
The MSI and me are not in the same town at the moment. Let me see if I can clarify what I mean without a screenshot. The screen is the "Welcome screen" and the button is the red one in the lower left corner. I can reach that by pressing "S" which I interpet as the keyboard is active.
I snatched a screenshot from Google to show which screen I mean.

Now this is a curly one mate I can usually use the mouse on that red square to shut down and stuff etc So I am just wondering why you have to use the S key?

Is this machine very old? and has it got a lot of data on it? If not then you should be able to - or at least I would try - tapping F8 on power up when you get the DOS screen it may be worth a try at the repair option.

If that doesn't work and you are not worried about losing data on the machine you can do a factory default - that is you can take it back to an out of the box / shop state by pressing an F key while powering up - different machines have different F keys to do this. Most factory made machines to the best of my knowledge come with a safe recovery partition.

My Google's come up with F3 just tap it rhythmically on power up it should come up with the option to default. It should then go to a reinstall process and all the updates thereafter of course.

Let us know how it goes.

One last thing I didn't ask was do you have nay rescue disk or CD's at all with the machine If not and you manage to reinstall - make one straight away as soon as you get it set up - will save you all this, and when completely set up mate do an image to an external. :)

Thank's for prompt reply.
The reason for the "S" key was simply to check if the keyboard responded.
It looks like we have the same conclusion. Factory reset. F3 is the right button in this MSI
As the previous owner does not have any rescue discs I'll just hook up the drive to an other computer and move all ceated data.
Will make rescue discs a.s.a.p when it's back to normal again.

I Restored the MSI computer to factory default with the built in system. The problem with the keyboard was still there.
At a closer look it feels like there is something wrong with the keyboard cicuit board. If I listen ver closely I can hear a sound when i try to type text. Almost as if the "Ctrl" or other key was pressed. The MSI now goes back to the shop for a hardware check.
End of story

Best idea Thomas sounds like the KB has had the biscuit mate. As an afterthought maybe it had some beverage split on it? Stranger things happen mate!! and would explain some of the sticking eh? :)
