    Prevent computer access during repair?

My computer is going back to the supplier for a the CPU, heatsink and fan to be replaced due to CPU overheating.
I am running Windows 7 Premium 64 and currently do not have an access password.
What is the best way to prevent access to my files whilst it is away, but providing the supplier with access they will need to the BIOS etc so that they can effect the repair and set the clock speed?

Take the hard disk out? They shouldn't need it to do what you say - perhaps check with them. Otherwise encrypt the drive using Truecrypt - make sure you use a strong password and write it down. You can always remove the encryption later.

I second the suggestion of pincushion, removing the hard disk is the only 100% sure way of ensuring. Even if you leave the system password-protected, they can always take the HD to a second machine and spy from there. Encryption helps too, if you put a good password that's difficult to guess, but again, a brute force attack might find it too.
Just leave the HD at home and your data will be safe.

I would check with the supplier before removing the hard drive since doing so could void that warranty on the machine.

Thanks for these responses, I've checked with the supplier and they are happy for me to remove the hard drive.

Thanks for telling us what you will do - Lady Fitzgerald had a point about invalidating any warranty, which is always a concern in such situations.
