    Site Safety

    I usually download stuff from download.com and not the author's site as I belive download.com to be free of spyware/virus etc. Is this right as they had a spyware free tag under the download link a while ago but I don't see it anymore, is it safe to download from them or not? Some software comes with toolbars etc but there is an option to not install it.

    I don't download from them anymore. They usually have a bunch of crapware like mcfae or a toolbar. I prefer using filehippo.com since they don't make you download extra stuff. I would trust the authors site more though since there's is the original source.

    Hello ;

    I suggest not to download from CNET : Download.com . Recently i downloaded a software from them and got a funmoods toolbar downloaded on my opera,firefox and IE browsers . It installed even though i unchecked the boxes .
    So i don't think it is spyware free .

    Instead i prefer downloading from softpedia as i never got any hijacker toolbar or any suspicious program installed when downloading from it. :)

    I couldn't agree more.

    It has been years ago since I last downloaded something from one of such sites. It's ALWAYS better to download from the real author than from a third party, be it free, commercial or open source. It's the only place I would 100% trust to find the full, unmodified program. Any other (download.com, softpedia, filehippo or anything else) might modify or put any additional, unwanted thing on the programs you want.
