Microsoft silverlight was to be the next greatest java replcement but hasn't got much favor, i uninstalled it too, i found it's only ms sites that used it.
msi doesn't always download updates for you. Sometimes you have to download them yourself. Still, that's much better than having to check for updates yourself. The latest version seems to be better at downloading updates than it used to be.

Odd that you didn't get a notice to update msi to update itself; i did.
