    Cannot update Avira

This actually started some months ago on both my PC's at pretty much the same time. I use Avira as AV. For some reason though it just wouldn't update anymore. Normal the updater gets to about 250kb, waits half a minute then does another 250kb, waits half a minute... etc. Somewhere between 1 and 1,5MB into the update it just stops and a few minutes later it shuts itself off.

About two months ago I did a complete reinstall on my one PC. Used AVG for a while and that worked fine but I thought I'd try Avira again, downloaded the latest version but it still won't update.

I started a thread about this at the Avira support forum: Cannot update Avira - Avira Free Antivirus für Windows - Avira Support Forum
but was wondering if anyone here had any suggestions...

    Thanks.

You might not like my suggestion. What I would do is use MSE for the anti virus.
Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows
I also recommend using this (free or Pro) take you choice.

Did you uninstall AVG completely? You will need to use the uninstall tool...
    AVG:

    AVG Remover (32bit) 2012
    AVG Remover (64bit) 2012

This started even before AVG was on the computer i.e. before my reinstall.

Download a new copy of free Avira ... BUT! Don't run it yet!!

Next, download the uninstall cleaner for Avira:

    http://www.avira.com/en/support-download-avira-registrycleaner
    http://dlpro.antivir.com/package/regcleaner/win32/en/avira_registry_cleaner_en.exe

Now, disconnect from the Internet (unplug your modem) ... uninstall Avira using the cleaning tool.

After you've done that Right click on Avira's 'set-up' and choose to run as Administrator .... let it install. Reboot.

This registry cleaner... will it only touch the Avira registry entries or will it clean everything? The last time I used a registry cleaner it killed all my licenses for my CAD software...

This is Avira's own cleaner ... it only touches Avira listings.

I accidentally fixed this problem by resetting the internet connections in Internet Explorer even though IE is not my default browser!
Regardless of your default web browser, reset your Internet Explorer settings by going to "Tools" (Alt + X keyboard shortcut) > "Internet Options" > "Advanced" tab. Select "Reset", making sure to choose the "Delete personal setting" check box.
I had not been able to update AVIRA Premium for a month when after doing this (for a completely different reason) I noticed AVIRA successfully updated!

    Hope it works for you.
