Would you recommend MSE final over Kaspersky 2010?

Hostfiles who? Kaspersky blocks banners by detecting the ip address of ads and banners. I dont see from where the hostfiles come into picture.

i don;t know how the anti-banner component works, but it sure hasn't touched my etc\hosts file...

i'm not quite sure what a 'TSR' is either - a background process?

Kaspersky is not maintaining their own unique list. Numerous persons and groups of goodwill post lists of these IPs on the net for free and easy access. Add them to your HOSTS file.

All URLs are compared to the HOSTS file for IP conversion prior to leaving the PC for a DNS lookup.

TSR - Terminate and Stay Resident. My age is showing.

If Kaspersky is not modifying/using the HOSTS file, Kaspersky is instead obfuscating the function of HOSTS.

I am not trying to bag on Kaspersky. I am just saying, "Nice feature. Don't need it."

numerous persons and groups of goodwill also post open-source operating systems on the net for free and easy access.

i prefer paid alternatives that make my life easier, because i don't like routinely having to muck about editing text files to get the damn thing to work how i want it to.

i have a similar view to av software - i just want the darn thing to work, and keep working, without having to routinely remember to manually download lists and edit text files to be safe.

each to his own - it's great that there is so much choice out there!

*edit* i thought that's what you meant by tsr - haven't heard the term used for a while...

    For free MSE is great...
BUT, if you want to pay to have security then I would recommend KIS 2010 & is what I use.
(I've never been infected using Kaspersky for the last 6 years)
I like it better than MSE because I have more total control over what it does or doesn't do.
Kaspersky can get go over some people's heads though when it comes to the Advanced settings so for those you should either use it with default setting or use MSE.

But given the choice between the two I choose KIS 2010!

Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 will not install on my us version of windows 7 x64 ultimate. During install keep getting Error 1722 InstallDriverKl1x64. I tried running it in compatibility mode and still nothing. As to date Avast is the only one to install without any troubles. I am going to give the MSE a try.

This is post from their forum on the Kaspersky site listed in the internet security 2010 forum. This is quoted from his listing(global moderator Don Pelotas)

    Quote"
Kaspersky will support Windows 7 and they will support it..... just always with new OS's.............when it's released to the public and not generally during the beta/release candidate phase since it generally a waste of resources as it it like a moving target until the last phase. Rest assured, Kaspersky is already accutely aware of this new OS and have tested internally & will continue to do so in a manner that will...again like always make it possible to have Windows 7 support available from the moment it is released sometime around october 22 from.......this date includes RTM versions. So support for Windows 7 will be around this date.

When it is available for download it will be here:Product Updates you can grab it or just glance at the forum, there will always be threads regading this and the sticky:Download the latest Kaspersky product updates - Kaspersky Lab Forum will of course get an update ASAP when it happens.

Please understand that you are "on your own" if you decide to ignore this and install version 2009/2010 anyway and then end up in trouble with a messed up beta OS........because thats what Windows 7 are at this point and until release time in october! Please also refrain from opening posts regarding this in the forum.

Edit 16-10-09: Kaspersky 2010 for Windows 7 is now in Release candidate mode and should be out very soon .... aka before the october 22 release of Windows 7.

i'm not sure about this not yet ready for windows 7 - i've been using the standard kis 2010 version 9.0.0.463 with my win7 x64 rtm for a while now, and all is groovy - i don;t recall problems with the rc1 either.

it sounds like kaspersky support being real lazy.

by the way, BWK, you can use the quote button to do things like this:
