also im not sure if i should also install an internet security software. if so which should i use?

ps. i not sure what the difference is between antivirus and internet security or what not.
pps. not sure if this is in the right thread. this has only been the second time ive been on the forum.

Avast is fine, but I prefer MSE personally. Windows firewall does fine in Windows 7 & 8. In older versions Comodo is decent, but to be honest I haven't used it at all for a couple years. The best solution for a firewall is having a router or modem with one built in. Internet security software is usually software that contains both an antivirus and firewall, possibly with other, typically pointless, features. I recommend downloading and installing MalwareBytes Antimalware Free (say no to the free trial) and running a scan, after updating, at least once every two weeks. No antivirus catches everything all the time, and MBAMs on-demand scanner works fairly well.

I use Avira (the free version). once you disable the popup (plenty of tutorials, just google) it's pretty good and very light on system resources. MSE is ok, but doesn't shine if you actually do dangerous or stupid things.

"internet security" is just a name they give to lighter antivirus.

Windows 7 has its own firewall that to the contrary of XP's one is actually useful, stick with that.

Most anti viruses and firewalls will keep you safe but they don't play well with Windows 7. They cause many many problems.
This is what I use and they work well and play well with Windows 7.

I would suggest trying either Avira or Avast, both are known to be very good and relatively lightweight. I'm using Avira myself and it does a good job, while using Avast on my work computer.
I think MSE is waaaay overrated in this forum too. It tried it, and while it does a fine work, it's still far from more complete professional suites, and most important, has a low detection ratio, ie, misses a lot of viruses. It's lightweight and ad-free though, a very good thing.

I too am in the minority here and recommend Avast. MSE, when I tried it for a few months, did let a virus into my system. I DO go to some ..... shall we say....not very safe sites though. Avast caught them all beforehand and after I reinstalled it. I too would recommend windows built in firewall, MS did finally get it right as they did for so many things in 7.

Avira is fine but I've been using Unthreat antivirus with Comodo and I'm very happy with the protection so maybe you should consider trying that combination.

I use Comodo internet security premium free version.
Comodo has there own anti virus which is pretty good, been using it a couple months already. Blocked some infections and malicious sites on my pc already so it's doing its job. Best of all it uses it's famous firewall along with it so you get the best of both worlds. I totally recommend it.

There is, it is called Kingsoft antivirus 2012 and it is free, it cans automatically USB anything drives and is a good antivirus program. It actually works along side other antivirus programs except in windows 8 it disables WD
I have been beta testing it prior to it coming out and I actually think it is awesome and I have it on every machine I own and almost all my client computers that have heavy usage

the interesting part of usb disk security is the USB Vaccination, it makes an auto run file in the usb so the usb would be protected against auto run Trojans and viruses

I've been running AVG Free 2013 plus ZoneAlarm Free Firewall for like a year now. The combination runs pretty smoothly and I like it a lot.
I especially like ZoneAlarm's autolearn feature.
Hope it helps.
