Backward compatibility in Remote Login

I am having Windows server 2003 OS installed on my machine. I am trying to connect to this machine remotely from different machines having different OS.
a) While I try to connect from a machine having Win XP OS, I am able to connect using "mstsc /console"
b) While I try to connect from a machine having Win 7 OS, I am able to connect using "mstsc /console", but a different session is created i.e. I am not able to see the running applications, which are visible in point (a) mentioned above.
