Microsoft Security Essentials

Hi There,

I'm trying to install Microsoft Security Essentials on my computer. I have downloaded the Windows 7, 64 bit edition which suits my computer. I get past the geniune windows bit and then I get hit by: "Can't complete the Microsoft Security Essentials Installation Wizard - Eoor code: 0x80070643"

I am running build 7600 of Windows 7 If that helps,

Thanks Hamish

Has anyone found a fix for this yet?

None of the fixes on the posted link above work for me.

Go to start, type in "Windows update" and hit enter. On the middle-left side of windows update window, hit "Check for Updates"
Now, install ALL important and OPTIONAL updates. Reboot and try again.

Hmm, well Im not sure if I want to install 34 optional language packs just to install MSE.

Have a new install of Win 7, haven't put in any anti virus yet, tried all the above fixes except the 34 optional language packs, still get the same error

I guess I will just have to install AVG or something else.

Have you previously installed other antimalware software from third party? If yes you should run the clean up tool from your vendor.

also

Step 2: Make sure the Windows Installer service is running
  1. In Windows Vista or Windows 7, click Start , click in the Start Search box, type services.msc , and then press ENTER .
  2. Right-click Windows Installer , and then click Start . If Start is unavailable and the Stop and Restart options are available, the service is already started.
  3. In the Services window, on the File menu, click Exit .
  4. In Windows Vista or Windows 7, click Start , click in the Start Search box, and then type command prompt . Right-click Command Prompt , and then click Run as administrator .
  5. Type MSIEXEC /REGSERVER and then press ENTER . Note that there will be no indication that this command has succeeded or failed.
  6. Try to install Microsoft Security Essentials again.
Step 3: Start Windows in Selective Startup mode
  1. In Windows Vista or Windows 7, click Start , click in the Start Search box, type msconfig , and then press ENTER .
  2. In the General tab, click Selective Startup , and then clear the Load Startup Items check box.
  3. On the Services tab, select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then clear all the check boxes for the services that remain in the list.
  4. Click OK , and then click Restart to restart the computer.
  5. Try to install Microsoft Security Essentials again.

Thanks swarfega

But I have already tried the clean up tool and step 2 and 3 with no luck.

Like I said this is a clean install of 7 and I have had no anti virus running on it yet.

The only thing I know that is running on this install is windows defender, I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

I have been looking for a fix for this for a few days now and it would seem that its nothing to do with Win 7 because its happening on XP and Vista machines too.

When MSE is installed it normally disables Defender. Maybe the installer is having issues with performing that action. Try disable Defender before running the installer.
