Advantages of MSE with MBAM Pro?

    Hello all,

This is my first post here but I have been reading here for the last few weeks and have learned a lot about Windows 7 and my computer. I am no computer expert but this site has helped me get better at it. My system is a store-bought HP P6-2100 with 4 GB RAM and a 1 TB hard drive.

I have a lifetime paid Malwarebytes subscription. I use Microsoft Security Essentials for my anti-virus program. I know that MSE will work with MBAM in real time scanning and you can set up exclusions in both programs so they do not conflict with each other. My question is, what are the advantages to using MWB Pro with real time scanning if MSE has real time protection as well? Does it help or hurt the computer's performance or scan efficacy?

Right now I am running just the free version of MBAM, the one that is only an on-demand scanner and malware removal tool. I do a quick scan with MBAM and MSE each a few times a week. I run a full scan of MSE and MWB both at least once a week. Does MBAM Pro improve protection and does it slow down the computer? My computer is very fast and efficient with MSE, that is one of the things I like about it. I would like to be able to use the paid MBAM if it will not hinder anything but only if it can help increase my security.

I use a few other programs too: Secunia, Ad Block Plus, Web Mail Ad Block, Web Of Trust and Do Not Track Me. My browser is Firefox 18.0.2 and I use Flagfox to see the country of origin of the server for the web sites I visit. I use CCleaner every so often to keep my registry updated and organized. I have the free version of Super Anti-Spyware but I only use it to scan for unwanted cookies.

    Thanks for any input here.

    Welcome Jimmy.

The basic premise behind using another anti-malware tool besides the usual one (MSE for example), is that one product is not sufficient to cover all the possible malware variants. So, by taking a layered approach to security, you improve the probability of being able to catch at least the most common malware.

The advantages behind Malwarebytes Pro are:

    1. Automatic updates,
2 Ability to schedule automatic updates and different types of scans,
    3. A useful malicious website/IP blocker (prevents you from connecting to a known malicious websites/IP addresses)

The Pro version has a very small memory footprint and is not resource "hungry" so you will notice no difference to the performance/ speed of your machine.

The rest of your programmes sound fine to me. I would consider adding the HTTPS Everywhere Add-On to Firefox for added security. You didn't mention having a firewall, but I assume you are using the standard Windows Firewall - that is more than adequate so there is no need to consider an alternative.

To add to Golden's great advice, you can also configure MBAM Pro to automatically update & do a flash scan, without having the real time file and web shields active........ Sort of a hybrid approach. You can activate MBAMP and all of its shields, and if you notice no system drag then you can leave it active, but if you notice a slow down (I admit, I did) then you can deactivate the real time shields and just set MBAMP to update at each boot, and then do a "Flash Scan" (available only in the Pro version). The flash scan on my machine takes under 15sec to complete, and would be a great second layer of protection without the full file shield running 24/365.

    Oh yea............Welcome Jimmy!!!

    Thanks for the welcome..

I do have an external TP Link N router, it does a good job with my desktop, work laptop and my wife's laptop. I appreciate the info on the https Everywhere, I will check into that when I have a little more time. I will also upgrade to the MBAM Pro version, I bought it so I may as well use it. I will need to go into each program and make the exclusions so they will not conflict with each other. I was just concerned about MSE because I do not want to have anything on here that would hamper its capabilities.

I have used MSE in the past but I have been using Avast for a while, I recently had problems with it because I tried out their Beta of version 8. That did not go well at all so I ran their removal tool and wanted to try out MSE 4.0. When I ran the removal tool either it took out some important Microsoft files with it or I made some error because I was unable to install MSE. I tried everything to fix the problem and restore the missing files and nothing worked. This past weekend I copied all of my important files on a flash drive and used the HP System Restore tool to reset the OS back to original specs. It has taken me a few days to get everything like I wanted and the last thing I want to do now is cause any other conflicts. I also learned not to do any Beta testing on important programs too...

Thanks again for the info here.

    No worries Jimmy

I don't think you will need to provide exclusions - I have seen many installations of the MSE/MBAM combination, including several that I have done - where there are no conflicts. However, if you feel better about doing that, there is also of course no shortcoming to doing them anyway.

The next time you need to do a reset/restore of your system, consider the clean installation approach - this way you don't get all the OEM manufacturers bloat. Bed-time reading:

Thanks again Golden. I wonder how would I know if there were any conflicts between MBAM and MSE? Would the scans take longer or the computer operate slower? The folks over on the Microsoft forums all preach very adamantly that no way, no how should you ever use MBAM Pro and MSE together, it just won't work, it will cause all kinds of problems, etc etc..So just exactly what kind of "problems" would I have with them anyway?

Jimmy, you can run both together, in real time, without worries. Many, many users run them without even taking the time to set them both up with exclusions. My Wife's machine has had both installed for over a year without a single hiccup.

    Hi Jimmy,

DBone is 100% correct - the writers of Malwarebytes have specifically written the software to not interact with MSE. I think what Microsoft may be referring to is having another comparable product (e.g. Avast) installed at the same time as MSE - thats a different matter altogether.

I've never seen any interaction between the two in all the installations I have seen and worked with, and I've never seen an article where Microsoft claims that there may be trouble having MBAM installed at the same (do you have a link for that claim?). Were they to interact, it may manifest itself as extremely sluggish behaviour, or even ludicrous pop-up warnings to the effect that it has found malware in the MSE installation.

Note : I would not recommend running a scan of MSE and MBAM at the same time. There is potential for a conflict, and certainly your system might be slower during the actual scan.

You have nothing to worry about as far as MSE and MBAM are concerned.

These are the instructions to create the exclusions between MSE and MBAM if you choose - I have never had a need to do that:

You have received some great answers to your questions. Just to let you know you don't have to nothing techie when you use MSE and MAM Pro active at the same time. I just installed both and left them alone except updates. I check for updates on programs manually a few times a day. MAM and MSE along with Windows 7 built in firewall which is also set to default play and work well together. Of course you can set both to auto update. I believe that is default in both programs. As many I also have 3rd party programs I use on demand to even check other security things. Like Golden mentioned we use a (layered) protection method. No one anti program does it all.

I also would like to state; how the computers are used means a lot. You must be careful of sites you go to,what you download and what email you do or do not open. Their is no combinations of programs that will protect you against yourself. They are designed to protect you from the other guy.

Thanks again everyone, it is good to get this much help this quickly and on a level I can understand. Often on other forums there is a lot of jargon and repetitive double-speak that I just can not abide..I just now used Revo to uninstall the free MBAM and I have just now downloaded MBAM Pro and set up my update and scan preferences and enabled the protection module. I did not set up any exclusions in either program. I have had no problems with them so far and I am sure they will do fine.

It is very good to be able to use MBAM Pro again and I do appreciate the real-world useful answers here. I just bought the license for MBAM back in December and it made no sense not to use something I paid $25.00 for. Plus MBAM is just absolutely one of the best anti-malware tools there is. I have used it to clear up a few problems I have had in the past and it always works great. MSE works great too and I update it myself manually twice a day.

I have seen MBAM keep someone from accessing a bad web site. It popped up a window that said MBAM had prevented access to the malicious site. I like that functionality and that was one reason why I purchased the Pro License. I do not surf unsavory sites and I do not visit any torrent or file sharing sites either. I am always very cautious about clicking any link whether in an email or a web site, and often I will not click links in emails even from people I know. No AV program will catch all of the bad stuff all of the time, but I figure if malware can get past MSE it can probably get past any of the other paid AV programs too so MSE and MBAM is the best combination for me. I really like the light impact that MSE and MBAM have on my system. Before I switched back to MSE I had been using another AV program. It caused a very noticeable slowdown and I was considering adding RAM to speed my computer back up to normal.

Thanks again for your help on this. I hope to be able to return the favor some time soon.

    Jimmy
