It shouldn't open up the file it should open up the folder that Hosts file is in . You are clicking on Open . You're suppose to click on Open file location

I'm confused. When I hit ok in the search window it takes me right to the etc folder which shows the host file. when I try to open the host file it takes me to the choice window. Am I starting from the wrong place?

Prescottbob,

Let's just forget the hosts thing...

If you have the Addition.txt that was created when you initially ran FRST, please attach it to a post.

Next, please go to Post #117 and use the ESET ServicesRepair Utility.

Then run the Farbar Service Scanner the same as before, and post the new FSS.txt in your reply.

# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handle within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost

There is a last line entry missing in the hosta file, maybe it got cut off:
# ::1 localhost

Give this a last try:

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories, and find the Command Prompt
Right-click the Command Prompt and select: Run as Administrator

At the blinking cursor of the Command Prompt, copy/paste the following text inside the code box, and press: Enter
Code:
notepad C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
When done, please provide the results. (Go to the cmd icon on the upper left, Edit > Select all, Edit > Copy...etc.)

In the mean time, will check the Addition.txt

This is very important:
Post #117: ESET ServicesRepair Utility.

Run the Farbar Service Scanner and post the new FSS.txt in your reply.

The Addition.txt has a group pf "stuff" you need to get rid of, but we can do that later...

You have enough to do for now.
