Odd behavior, please advice, cannot access MSE/Defender

I'm on win 7 32 bit, i just noticed that all my downloaded files dissapear instantly after they finish downloading.

Can't access microsoft security essentials or defender either, they complain that i do not have permission even though i am on the administrator account.

Also this :

C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 91% complete.

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

I have malwarebytes, but a full scan reveals nothing.

I'm not sure what's going on here, is this a virus or is my windows installation corrupt?

Can't reinstall windows at this point (i have the installation files on a external HDD, but it wont let me boot from it).

Edit : My DVD drive is not showing up in windows explorer either.

Question2

win 7 64 bit

Okay this is freaky. I did a search on the MSE error message and found a site giving instructions on how to remove a rootkit called zeroaccess. I managed to get rid of it with hitmanpro and rogue killer. Windows defender still won't start though, error code 0x80070005 access denied. Also i am getting sporadic internet access here. For example i cant access internet with IE at all. I can access some sites on firefox, but not others. Scanning with MSE, malwarebytes and microsoft safety scanner now but they are all picking up nothing. Also tried TDSKiller.

Question2,

You have a new version of ZeroAccess.

Please download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
Select the 32-bit version.

Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click the downloaded file to run it.
  • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • FRST64 makes a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory from which the tool is run (Desktop).
Please provide the FRST.txt in your reply. <<---
The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log: Addition.txt
Also post the: Addition.txt

Need to dig a little deeper...

Please download Farbar Service Scanner
Save to the Desktop
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
  • Press: Scan
  • FSS creates a log, FSS.txt, on the Desktop.
Please provide the FSS.txt in your reply.

Hi there
I ALWAYS advise this solution. Backup regularly -- use a product like Free Macrium if you want a FREE product. Keep OS + applications on separate HDD or partition from your other data (Music, documents, video etc etc). That way you don't lose your data when re-installing the OS.

Backup before downloading / installing software so you can simply restore if the download doesn't work as expected or if the machine becomes infected.

Cheers

You may want to consider making a system image, so when something like this happens down the road, you can restore to the point when you made the system image.

Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup

It would be a good idea to run TDSSKiller and watch your system closely. ZeroAccess has been known to survive the re-installation process.

Quote:
Consider the case where someone attempts to remove the rootkit by formatting the volume where their OS is installed (say the c:\) and reinstalling Windows. ZeroAccess will survive this cleaning process and reinstall itself onto the fresh copy of Windows.
