Program installed in Program Files requires elevation?

I have a program that wanted to install in a document folder

I have installed it in Program Files, but it requires elevation or it produces errors when running. I know I can tick the Run As ... box in the shortcut, but is there a better way, such as taking ownership of the install folder?

You could try using this tutorial to see if it helps with this program.

My guess is that you used a portable version of the program instead of a "normal" one.
If so, it's normal that you're getting such errors. Portables often are made to write settings/data to the program folder, together with the main exe. Since users have read/write access to documents folders, it runs ok there, but normally users have read-only access to program files, so it may be failing when writing its stuff there.

The best solution I can think of is to figure out why and what it's being written and instruct the program to go to a document folder/appdata for those instead.
A less elegant and more insecure solution would be to grant all users read/write permission to the folder where the program sits, so it can write at will there whatever it needs.

Thanks for the replies. The problem with relying on elevation is that it doesn't work when the program is launched by opening a file. It's actually a C compiler, so this happens a lot!

It's not a portable program; I guess the developers just decided it was easier to install in a document folder, rather than mess around with UAC etc.

I will try setting the R/W properties for the install folder.
