Firewalls worth it

Hey,

I was trying with the idea of installing the trend security suite they Virgin are offering / throwing at me as part of the subscription however are suites like this actually worth it?

Sure the antivirus is an essential bit of software however do people really use a firewall other than what comes built into Windows?

There are other bits of the suite such as malware and child protection etc however, are these just smoke to cover up the otherwise bloated and crappy offering?

Cheers

Are you behind a router?

logicearth is right, a router provides extra protection. As far as firewalls, windows built in is more than enough. I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials an the default windows firewall.

Hi there ..... Virgin have been giving away Trend for a long time ...... It used to be the Micro Version .... What Version is it now ? ... I did try it some years ago .... And found that it tends to hog the memory .... IMO Windows Firewall does a perfectly good job .... And does not use much Resources

I am reviewing my secrity setup, and currently have (or could have) three firewalls - one on my router, the one on Windows 7 and the one that comes with Avast!. You will see that I have bought none of them specifically as a firewall - they are all spin-offs from other software or hardware. So -...

Are firewalls really needed?
I was going crazy about Shields Up reporting that two ports were open until I found that Skype was the culprit as this happened only when Skype was running, otherwise all my ports were stealth. I found out that having an open port is not really a security concern as I read here: Skype makes port...

firewalls
well I had bad experiences with firewalls, I use to have zonealarm free version , but got tiered of it because of all the configuration that needs to be done, and I heard how many of the firewall solutions caused problems to applications even if you add the required exceptions, so I just stick with...
