So far seems to be running pretty smoothly and much faster! Is there anything else I should do?

It didn't look to me like my technophobe son even had a virus protector on here! What should I make sure is loaded and running to keep things from happening again? I put MSE on here to check thing when this started and have set it to realtime, but I use AVG on our desktop so not so familiar with MSE. Suggestions would really be appreciated!

Run MSE with Malwarebytes .

Update MSE periodically

I can't possibly thank you enough for your help. You've saved a poor college kid at least several hundred dollars and a panic purchase before school starts. I'll be sure that he knows he must keep MSE going on here and run MB weekly. And I will definitely be bookmarking this site, lol.

Thank you again. I appreciate your time and infinite patience.

You're welcome.

Go ahead and remove all the log files and the programs that were used. No point of keeping them cause they update periodically. You could keep TFC if you would like.

I am having the same problem. I downloaded the FRST tool and compiled a fixlist, but the machine still is not booting after applying the fix list.

Nevermind....

When I ran bootrec.exe /scanos from the command prompt (booted with System Repair) it said 0 installations found. I went into diskpart and marked the OS partition ACTIVE

DISKPART and press Enter.
LIST DISK and press Enter.
SELECT DISK N and press Enter (N represents the disk you want).
LIST PARTITION and press Enter.
SELECT PARTITION N and press Enter (N represents the partition you want).
ACTIVE and press Enter.
EXIT and press Enter.
Startup repair reboot

After reboot it came up normally.
