More praise for Microsoft Security Essentials

Symantec, ESET, Avira, Sophos, Sunbelt etc.. beware - there's a new kid in town and his whooping your malware sniffing asses...

A security researcher has said that Microsoft's free anti-malware product is better than many paid-for security programs.

Jerome Segura of of ParetoLogic said that he had tested Microsoft Security Essentials' ability to detect a "pretty common" Trojan that many security products don't pick up.

Security Essentials did detect the Trojan every time he tested it, despite the fact that the Trojan changed its code slightly each time in order to try and evade detection.

I can say this - I read an article online about MSE finding stuff that the latest Kaspersky did not detect (Neither sure of virus definitions date nor of where I read the article) but I can also tell you that MSE has saved me 4 times this month - there is a particularly nasty virus that is spreading throughout campus b/c it self-propagates via network connections, shares, UFDs, basically any means it can. MSE found it on 3 different UFDs including my own after I loaned it to a friend of mine to copy a political video for me to watch. It captured it instantaneously and my laptop was not harmed. It has since been captured 4 more times, and now me classmates are bringing their infected UFDs to me for cleaning....

All this because I am running MSE on my Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit RTM install on my Tablet-PC>...

MSSE is great! I did notice a bit of hig hCPU usage when first booting up but it stops after about 30 to 40 seconds. Disabling WU solves the problem.

In any case, MSSE saved me from a drive by that I encountered from an iframe ad. See attached...

This is a great security layer and blows away Win Defender IMO.

Not sure when people will learn not to depend on the VirusTotal logs when choosing an AV product. They tell you almost nothing, other than the fact that the file scanner does not detect it. No behavioral engines, no IPS, nothing.

I think VT is causing more harm than good at this point
