Before I follow those steps, I want to check which drives I should and shouldn't scan with Malwarebytes. I've had it installed for about a year now, and whenever I've done a full scan, I've gone with the two drives that were already ticked. Which of these should I tick?

Also, while I remember, I saw an ad today with a slightly different address; secure-fra.adnxs.com.

C and D look like the right ones.

E is your CD/DVD drive - do not scan it.

The other drive letters do not look as if they have anything that has data connected to them, so, there is no point in scanning them either.

Along with cottonball's instructions, flush the dirty DNS cache and restore MS's Hosts file:

Copy and paste these lines in Note pad.

@Echo on
pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset all
netsh int ip reset all
shutdown -r -t 1
del %0

Save as flush.bat to your desktop.
Right click the .bat file and choose to run as Administrator. Your computer will reboot itself.

It appears to be related to a Java script advertisement, so let's clean that up too:
Download TFC by Old Timer TFC - Temp File Cleaner by OldTimer - Geeks to Go Forums and save it to your desktop.
Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista/Windows 7 right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.

Should I flush the cache and restore the hosts file first, or run FRST and Malwarebytes first?

Flush the DNS cache and restore the hosts file, plus run TFC first. Then run FRST and Malwarebytes.

I'm about to run flush.bat before going to bed, and I'll run TFC tomorrow. I've never used it before, so is there anything I should know about it before doing so? Is it similar to CCleaner?

Edit: I ran it, but I forgot that Avira blocks access to the hosts file by default. I can easily unblock it, though. Should I repeat the process tomorrow, or do I need to do something else now that I've already run it once?

Edit 2: The Action Centre's saying Avira isn't turned on even though it is. Should I follow the instructions listed below or perform a system restore?

Follow the instructions in the Avira link. Then run TFC...

TFC (Temp File Cleaner) will clear out all temp folders for all user accounts (temp, IE temp, java, FF, Opera, Chrome, Safari), including Administrator, All Users, LocalService, NetworkService, and any other accounts in the user folder. It also cleans out the %systemroot%\temp folder and checks for .tmp files in the %systemdrive% root folder, %systemroot%, and the system32 folder (both 32bit and 64bit on 64bit OSs). It shows the amount removed for each location found (in bytes) and the total removed (in MB). Before running, it will stop Explorer and all other running apps. When finished, a reboot is required. The user must reboot to finish clearing any in-use temp files.

TFC only cleans temp folders. TFC will not clean URL history, prefetch, or cookies. Depending on how often someone cleans their temp folders, their system hardware, and how many accounts are present, it can take anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or more. TFC will completely clear all temp files where other temp file cleaners may fail. TFC requires a reboot immediately after running.

Be sure to save any unsaved work before running TFC, because TFC clears all items off the desktop while it's running.

Thanks. By the way, I tried using Avira's instructions to no avail, but there was a large update yesterday and a few people have had trouble with Avira since then. Both my dad and I are experiencing this issue since updating, and I think the update has been pulled because my laptop downloaded a smaller update today which didn't change the product version, and I didn't have it switched on since then.

With that in mind, should I continue with running TFC or wait for the issues to be resolved? Also, should I still do something about the hosts file or just leave it now?

Thanks. I've just run it. Tomorrow, do I go through with what cottonball said?
