Windows Defender Service running when it is not running!

I found that the Windows Defender Service was running, even though I have other AV/Malware software that I thought turned it off. Checking in security is show both softwares with Defender shown as OFF!
Is it safe to stop and disable that service?

Install the recommended Microsoft Security Essentials
which will turn off Defender.

Otherwise you can turn it off if you're satisfied with your AV.

Howdy Gregrocker,
I am probably confused with W8, which turns off the resident Window Security when a purchased alternative is installed. I thought Windows Defender was Microsoft Essentials plus antimalware protection??
I successfully used the Windows Defender Offline Tool to unlock a Ransomware locked computer.
The WD is technically turned off in the Security Section of Windows, but it is still running a process/service that I thought would not be the case? Will investigate and thanks!

In windows 8 it was rebranded Windows Defender,

Windows Defender - Turn On or Off in Windows 8

Windows 8 comes with a new version of Windows Defender which is the re-branded "Microsoft Security Essentials" (MSE).

In windows 7 it is a separate tool,

Windows Defender - Turn On or Off

!SASCore service running all the time, not running Superantispyware?
Found the the above service was running all the time and I only occasionally use SuperSpyware AntiSpyware as a standalone scan. This is solely as backup check to my Antimalwarebytes Pro. May I stop and disable it, and how would I remove it entirely? Thanks Glenn
