IE10 browser hijacked. Unable to load firewall or download programs.

Good afternoon. Yesterday, I downloaded an update for my husband's HP printer onto his computer. At the same time, it downloaded BING, which we have never used. After that, we noticed his firewall was off, and we were unable to get it turned back on. Also, we cannot download any security. And his home page has changed. We are unable to change it back. We have Microsoft security essentials which runs regularly. In doing some research, it appears his browser has been hijacked.

Can someone please help me get his computer UN-hijacked? https://www.sevenforums.com/images/smilies/confused.gif

Here are some things you might want to try:
    1. Run a full scan on Security Essentials? If so, did you find any viruses?
    2. Go to Start>Run>msconfig and go to the startup tab and make sure that only the items that are important (eg. Windows 7, Intel Software, Microsoft Security Essentials) items are selected; you may also be able to find the item if it has made a shortcut here.
    3. Try going into safe mode and see if anything changes.
    4. What you may also want to do is to get Malwarebytes and perform a scan: Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware download

If all of these fail, try the Windows Defender Offline as you may be experiencing some form of rootkit or other hidden virus.

    Samgray2005,

Before engaging in running programs, let's try to find the cause...

Please use the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
    Download: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-recovery-scan-tool/
Select the version that applies to your system.
    Save it to your Desktop.

Double-click the downloaded file to run it.
When the tool opens click Yes to the disclaimer.

    Press the Scan button.

The tool makes a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory from which the tool is run (Desktop).
Please provide the FRST.txt in your reply.

The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log: Addition.txt
Also post the Addition.txt in your reply.

Next, download the Farbar Service Scanner

    Save to the Desktop
    • Make sure the following options are checked:
      • Internet Services
      • Windows Firewall
      • System Restore
      • Security Center
      • Windows Update
      • Windows Defender
    • Press: Scan
    • FSS creates a log, FSS.txt, on the Desktop.
Please provide the FSS.txt in your reply

    Homepage back, Firewall not.

    Good morning Gellertb and Cottonball.

Gallertb: I ran malwarebytes last night and it had 198 found issues. after running it, the computer was functioning better. I was able to load the home page and it stayed. I still am not able to get the firewall up.

Cottonball: You helped my sister a couple of weeks ago on her infected work computer. Thank you! I will do as you suggest when I get home from work tonight, and tomorrow (Wednesday) I am off, so I will have more time to work on this. Thank you for your suggestion. I will get on it!

Would you by any chance be able to send me the log file that Malewarebytes created? I might be able to find out more about the situation...

    Yes. That will help.

The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab.
