Supscious Internet Connect (all) - oscount.techsmith.com

Hello,

From what I can gather this address (oscount.techsmith.com) is due to the installation of Camtasia Studio. The program activate using this connection, upon finding that out I uninstall the trial version but the problem still persist.

All my internet connection is trying to connect to this website with the IP address of 127.0.0.1 (internal IP), such as my Internet Browser or another online software.

I am currently using Windows' hosts file to block this connection as a mean. My Firewall's Comodo does not help track down what is causing this connection. Regedit (Registry editor) is clean of anything that have the word "Techsmith" in it.

I looked at my Startup program and it clean, there is nothing in Services either.

So what I currently need help with is, how do I track down what 'allowing' oscount.techsmith.com to be connected? Currently it looking like a spyware even though Camtasia is a 'legit' company.

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Disable the Windows service named DNS Client. Doing that might let you see what app is making a connection to the website of interest. You can use W7's native Resource Monitor to look at the connections. See the tab named Network and open each area on that tab.

You might need to remove the block from the HOSTS file first to see a connect.

Let us know if you need more details to do any of the steps above.

You might also want to make sure that all 'Proxy' settings are disabled.

1) Under “Tools” in the browser tool bar select “Internet Options”.
2) In the “Internet Options” window that pops up, click the “Connections” tab at the top.
3) Click “LAN Settings” near the bottom of the “Connections” section.
4) If the “Proxy server” checkbox is marked with a check, click it to deselect/uncheck it.
5) Click “Ok” to close the “Local Area Network (LAN) Settings” window.
6) Click “Ok” to close the “Internet Options” window.
Reboot
Make sure "Proxy server" is still disabled under your LAN Settings.
Test whether internet connectivity is restored.

I just cleaned tech smith from both of my computers. It will be into everything.
I had to use regedit to find all of it.
To the best of my knowledge it came with a program called Jing.

Jing is the freeware screen capture by TechSmith TechSmith | Jing, Free Screenshot and Screencast Software

It would seem that free does not include a complete uninstall.

Overall. It seem I manage to solve it. For anyone in the future having same problem. It seem that the "hosts" file is the one that causing this problem. It just mean that the hosts really does work and block all connection to techsmith. The IP was a loopback (127.0.1), but when it resolve the IP it resolve as "oscount.techsmith.com" which is one of the entry I added to my hosts file. For some reason it does not resolve to other address but to this address so it raise my suspicion. I replaced the hosts file with a default one, after a few minutes (10-30minutes), rechecking my internet connection, the problem seem solved, the IP is still 127.0.0.1 but the resolve is my computer's name.

Thank for the welcome. Resource Monitor can be access in Task Manager under "Performance" tab. It seem Microsoft removed it from "Windows Menu" and searching in "Win+S" does not make it appear.

Thanks. But techsmith.com is a proxy so it would mean my internet connection should not work at all if I proxy to them.

From what I remember, it a file call "snagit.exe" that try to connect to the internet rather than Camtasia studio itself or other editor/recorder program.

Resource Monitor can be found on the Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools

Or in the Search box of the Start Menu type "Resource" (Without the quotes)

SnagIt and Jing both are not Freeware,
Both have a free trail periods of I believe 30 days but are not free to use indefinitely,
Cheers.

Hello,
I thought maybe to help, after the fact to check and see if
there is anything residual still running(services etc.)
by maybe trying autoruns just to make sure.
Link here from bleeping,

Autoruns Download
just remove any check marks that may belong to the issue.
