Is not using SSL email a security concern ?

I'm helping someone setup a new Win 8.1 laptop.
I uninstalled the pre-installed trial McAfee AV, and it's now using the built in Windows Defender (WD) AV.
I installed Windows Live Mail 2012.
She has a RoadRunner (TWC) mail account and it seems TWC does not support SSL.

Does this open a "security hole", not having SSL and using WD?
Does Win8-WD (or W7-MSE) scan email?

When the transfer from the old XP box is complete, I'll move her MBAM Pro license to the new laptop.

    Thanks in advance,
    David

Well you see...email itself is insecure to start with. It isnt encrypted or anything when it flies from server to server. Thus it makes no real difference if you access it via SSL. The only real way to secure your email would be to use client side encryption.
