    Is My Computer Safe?

I have Windows Defender and Windows Firewall installed and active. However I don't see an icon or other proof it is there and active. So is this enough security? I'm used to having some sign of security.

    Nervous.

Hi there .. I take it you have a Router if so that is another form of Firewall .. So you are well covered in that department .. As for Windows Defender is runs in the back ground .. But you really need a good Antivirus and that is down to personal taste ..

I'd recommend Avast for full time protection and Malwarebytes for an on demand scanner.

Windows 7 built in Defender is old and obsolete. You are not safe using it.
Any newer anti virus installed should turn off Defender.
What is the best protection is up to the owner/operator of the computer.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes Anti Malware Pro; both run active. I use Windows 7 built in firewall.

Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Protect, Detect & Remove Malware From Your PC

I also have a few on demand programs I use when need be.
Their is no one protection programs that does it all.

No computer is safe if the operator is unsafe. If you want to lower your chances of infection drastically, do all internet work with a virtual Linux partition. Here is one option.

DO NOT use more that one (1) anti virus at one time on one computer.

I recommend WebRoot SecureAnywhere it is available exclusively at Best Buy though i have had it for nearly a year and it works great and it doesn't cost that much for 3 devices
