Trying to find software to password protect my USB ext HD

I Think there are TWO ways to password protect an ext USB HD but not sure.
1. Encrypt all the data on a drive with password, great for Top level security secrets which dont have .
2. Some techniques to deny access to a HD without a password, some security but fast access.

If that is true, then
#1 is slow but great security, and getting slower with large drives.
#2 would be faster but less secure.

I just purchased a 4TB USB3 HD and need it protected but it is only files, movies, etc that need low or medium level security to make me feel better.

But am concerned about encrypting 4TB of data as with some of the software I hvae tried to encrypt, it would be next year before you could access your data.

Am I off-base or is this a fair description of the situaton? And is there a reasonable approach? security versus speed?

Anyone know about software, free or purchased that can DENY access to an USB ext devise, password protected supplying medium data protection for these HUGE HDs being sold today? All these LOCK vendors mention "encryption" and scares me on a 4tb disk.

Any recommendations? I want data protection but do not have any government secrets but need to access the data on the large drive in a reasonable amount of time.

Most of the articles on the subject are from years back and all they had to deal with then was 250gb of data.
