Browsers, Thunderbird crash when attempting to download/transfer files

System was perfectly stable for such a long time...

A couple of months back, Firefox started crashing whenever I attempted any kind of file download or page save, from any site. For a while I could work around using DownThemAll plugin. Then that crashed too. For a while , I could get downloads by switching to Chrome or IE. Now every browser crashes at every attempted download. The crash occurs when a "where to save" window tries to open: depending on browser, it occurs instantly or after opening a messed-up explorer window.

Thunderbird also crashes if I attempt to save an attached file. However, I can drag attachments to desktop to retrieve them. So maybe it's invoking the "where to save" window that's the problem?

With both browser and mailer, everything is fine on program restart - Windows and other programs seem unaffected.

I have kept Norton 360 fully updated, and accepted all Windows updates. Have run ccCleaner, Glary registry cleanup and Malwarebytes. Some junk found, but problem not resolved. Below are Windows failure reports from the three browsers. Any help would be very much appreciated!

Thanks in advance-

Hi Use Clean boot,
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/179159-troubleshoot-application-conflicts-performing-clean-startup.html
Click Start and type in the search box,
msconfig
Click on the suggestion on top or hit the Enter key,
Go to the Startup section and take some screen shots for a complete list,
Go to the Services section and on the bottom left Check the box to Hide All Microsoft services,
Repeat the screen shots,
See the links above my signature on how to take and upload screen shots here,
Cheers.

Thanks for this, ThrashZone. I'll be happy to upload screenshots of MSConfig, but there are about 60-80 items there, so a lot of shots. Or is there some way to re-size that window?

Meanwhile, I tried a couple of times to reboot in safe mode, with all non-MS services off except Norton 360, and no applications enabled. No improvement. (Normal startups are only Windows, Thunderbird, Firefox and Cobian plus ShellFolderFix and Classic Shell.)

Another item that I just realized may be relevant: when Windows starts up, about six Windows Explorer windows open, then most or all crash. This could be related to various applications crashing when the "where do you want to save this?" action begins. I have no idea how to suppress this. -Never mind; turns out it was ShellFolderFix doing that. Disabled now; guess I'll have to live with Win7 messing up my desktop all the time!

Err - sorry if I implied that. Six items in startup. 60~80 in Services, of which all but one (N360) disappear when "Hide all Microsoft services" is ticked.

Hi,
Post the screen shots
With the shots down to two
Go ahead and post screen shots of you Browser add-ons pages,
Internet explorer,
Gear symbol and Manage add-ons,
Bottom left column set the view to Show All Add-ons,
Post the Toolbars and extensions page,

Cheers.

Here are all the MSConfig screenshots. Only item that shows checked with MS services hidden is Norton 360. I'll gather screenshots for IE, if useful - but where the same thing happens in three browsers and Thunderbird, could that help diagnose the problem? Since it seems to happen just when an Explorer-type window opens to indicate where to save files, I'm wondering if it's a clash inside the file-management system. Not that I have any idea what I'm talking about here!

Thanks for taking the time.

Hi,
You were supposed to Check the box to Hide all Microsoft services
That would produce a much shorter list,
Replace those screen shots and add-on your Browser add-ons and you also left out the Startup section
Cheers.

Hi and thanks,
Firstly open Chrome,
Alter one of the Advanced setting to Not run background apps when Chrome is closed,

Compare your add-ons in each Firefox and Internet explorer,
Post any listing if they exist toolbars and extensions,
Reset Firefox,
