Windows 7: How do I fix my Windows Firewall?

My fav browser is chrome ish. Haha I use a very unheard of browser. It is not something a average user can use. No offense meant, it is just something you really have to tinker with. Beta like.

Chrome would be my top choice. They are more security conscious than firefox. Though that is changing. Google pays thousands of dollars to researchers to find vulnerabilities and fix them. So instead of a hacker hacking google chrome, and finding flaws to there advantage, it is much more worth it to them to get paid a ton of money by reporting it to google. You can also easily import your bookmarks from firefox right into chrome.

Pale moon is a fine option as well, though security is always iffy because you're getting it from a person who has modified the code of firefox. Up to you. It is a good browser though. But seeing as you were badly infected, you might want to go with chrome They have a 64 bit stable version now.

You can get it here at this link: https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/?platform=win64

Do you need help with network? Let me know the network situation you got and I can help. Details like router, what's hooped up to what, etc. will be needed.

EDIT: Quick note about panda. Sometimes panda will show news popups every now and then. You can turn this off by going into the settings, main menu- 3 lines at the top right, settings-then scroll down and turn news to off.

I used to be a "True Lover" of chrome...that is until I realized how much they actually spy on you etc. I hate IE and would never use that if it were the last browser out there. I liked Firefox because it was close to what I was used to with chrome and felt they didn't spy on me. If you could tell me otherwise I'd switch back...maybe.

I'll uninstall Pale Moon. I'm confused a bit...I have Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit laptop...you're the 2nd person that's telling me to download a 64-bit version. How's that supposed to work on my 32-bit? Just confused cuz I'm having a hard time downloading iTunes...I tried the 64-bit version and it told me to download what my PC runs. So I'm baffled here.

I'll definitely take your help with my network. I'll try to gather everything that I need for you tomorrow. I'm not up to it tonight.

Chrome and "scary" google:

If you are afraid of chrome due to the "spying" you should be more worried about your isp tracking every single website you go on, and monitoring you 24/7. Besides, you can use chrome without sending any info to google. Under settings, disable sending any info to google. Trust me, every company does what google does in terms of tracking. There is no getting around it. If not the browser, the websites you go on. Forum rule 13 states I cannot talk about ad blocking software so I won't.

There are also alternatives to google chrome that use the same engine etc. (like palemoon is to firefox)

See here:

Four Alternative, Useful Browsers Based On Google Chrome

Security of google chrome without google.

32 bits:

Apologies, did not know you were running windows 7 32 bit. I should have looked at your system specs more closely

Yes with a 32 bit system you can only install 32 bit applications. With 64 bit systems, you can use both 64 and 32 bit programs.

Network:

Sounds good

Ok...so I read that entire link. Went thru each one of the 4 browsers and read all about each and read their reviews as well. The one I'd be most comfortable with is the SRWare Iron...but as I got down to the bottom of page and was reading the reviews and comments etc...some were really knocking it for it's lack of speed and the fact it hadn't been updated in so long. But then I did my own research and it's different and they did upgrade it on 8/2/14...so now I'm confused. I'd love to go back to my chrome but I still have issues with all of their privacy stuff.

Ya that's what I thought but I'm having a really hard time downloading iTunes for some reason. I'll have to look into their troubleshooter I guess.

I don't know how to explain what's wrong or what I think is wrong...so I'll try to post the logs I get when I run the troubleshooter...I tried to read them but I can't make sense of it...maybe you can.

andrew129260...

Couple questions for you...

I noticed in Panda that there are actually 2 different versions? The one I downloaded which is the basic Panda AV Free and when I go to my accounts it's showing me a Panda Cloud AV? What's the difference with these?

I'm attaching 3 files from my Network Diagnosis. I don't know how to explain it but I have a feeling my settings in my router are wrong? I don't know lol...you tell me

It wouldn't let me attach the one file because it's a etl file...how do I attach that one?

O...and if I were to try Chrome again...I need the 32-bit version...and should I use one of those other browsers with it? Very scared as you can see

PANDA:

Nothing-the name changed recently from panda cloud antivirus free to just panda free antivirus. If you used my link you downloaded the right one

Your fine.

Network:

Thank you for the logs, but can you tell me what is going on? Like explain the situation in detail. Are you having problems connecting to the internet? It looks like you are connected wirelessly. Do you frequently lose connection? What exactly is going on? If you're not having an issue, you're fine If you need help setting up open dns let me know.

Web Browser:

Yes any browser would need to be 32 bit to install it since your running a 32 bit system. But do not worry about that, when you visit their page they will choose the right one automatically for you. No worries. You can use as many browsers as you like. Keep in mind though, the more browsers you have installed, the more the risk to your system. Every time you add a new application, it adds a new attack method. Not trying to scare you, just saying if you want another browser other than IE, stick with just one other browser.

Internet explorer 11 is a lot better then any version of internet explorer before it, and has very good security as well with its smartscreen filter which is turned on by default.

If your looking for an easy to use browser, internet explorer should be fine for you.

Well I can never really get a good solid connection...as in the bars are always showing a weak connection with like 3 bars only. And in one of the detailed logs it was showing me that my router settings aren't set right? Like the ipv4 & 6 are wrong? I think the ivp4 is right but not the 6...I wish I could attach the other file so you could actually read it all but it's a .etl file and it won't let me upload it...how can I upload it for you?

OMG I would never use IE...it has too many issues for me. I'm just afraid that chrome really hasn't changed much and they still watch everything and things like that. I know I know...it's just a fear I have with the hackers and stuff...and I'm following everything you said and posted...trust me I've changed to what you suggested...But if I were to try the iron one I still have to download chrome first right?

I'm glad haha

-What kind of router do you have? Make, model?
-How big is your house/apartment?
-What is the desktop/laptop you are using that is on the wireless? Make, model?
-Is it a built in wireless adapter or did you buy it? Make, model?
-Is it possible to be directly wired to the router?

As for chrome, no you do not need to download it to use the alternatives.

It's a Linksys E2500

My house is fairly lg. It's an old farm house that we totally gutted and redid. Had 7 bedrooms now has 3 and 2 full baths a office & a playroom(those were bedrooms at one time)and the usual lv rm dn rm kitchen etc. 2 floors.

It's my laptop that is connected to it wirelessly...everything I believe is in my specs.

It must be a built in adapter? I don't believe we ever bought one.

No it's not. The modem & router are upstairs in the office and I'm downstairs in lv room with laptop. I can't sit up there because I'm disabled.

Google chrome privacy policy:

Chrome Browser

Notice how almost everything that is "scary" is IF you sign into google chrome with your google account. So just don't.

Ah. Routers should always be on the main floor of the house. The signal of a router spreads out and level typically. So at the top of the house or the basement, coverage will be poorer as it has to go through walls etc. Routers at the top point of the house will cause trouble with the signal going to lower ground. If you are unable to move your router, consider buying a range booster to increase your range, or get a better router.
