Laptop shuts off after 2 minutes

I am trying to work on a Gateway NV79 with Win 7 that is my girlfriends. In safe mode I tried to run Malwarebytes and when it got to 200 threats detected it shut down. Tried it again and it got to about 10 and shut down. Then booted up in safe mode again and tried to do a quick scan in Avast and it shut down after a minute.
Then it came up with the message Launch windows repair or boot windows normally. I tried the Launch Windows repair but it just shuts down.
I have also tried to use JRT but it shuts down every time.
Is there anything I can do to get it working again?

Read every line in the below tutorials. It will have everything you need.

Recover your files by using this method:

Emergency Kit - save your files from a dead OS

Then reinstall windows using this method:

I finally got a custom scan to work in Malwarebytes and it found 2700 malware. Ran avast and it found 24 viruses. Now she can at least use her laptop to get email and such. It stays on for a couple of hours and then shuts down.
I still can't run JRT or other spyware scans without it shutting down. Thanks for the tutorials!

I suggest backing up the data then and doing a clean install. You can search for that tutorial as well. :)

Holy cow, from reading the thread title I was thinking the CPU probably needed some new thermal paste (overheating will shut down a machine pronto). But with all those infections, it's a wonder the thing even boots! I second the motion to do a fresh install.
