AVGfree (soon 2 b no more)

Well I returned home from work and turned the monitor on, and a window from AVGfree was open saying I must upgrade by 1 Dec, that there would be no more free updates. At a cost of 49$. No thanks; thank goodness for MS Essentials.

I don't think that MSE is a suitable replacement for a good AV with real time protection IMHO. I have seen it fail at rootkit protection miserably. In today's 'always online' environment I would rather pay for a good Internet Suite than waste my time cleaning an infected machine.

Maybe that pop up was just to try to entice people to pay for the Internet Security version.

When I went to the AVG main site it just said 8.5 free was expiring 1 December and offered a free upgrade to 9.0 free.

So I guess all is well after all.

I beg to differ. The website clearly does state that 8.5 expires the end of November.

And AVG while a reputable program does sneakily try to get one to obtain the paid product.

The notification was legit all right although misleading. I'm just glad I visited the website to see that 9.0 has a free version as well.

So there will be NO MORE FREE UPDATES for version 8.5

Hi, armyslowrdr. I can guarantee you AVG is not doing this. Are you using version 8.5? 8.5 will stop getting updates on December 1. But you can upgrade to 9.0, free. And trust me, its a very good update!

Yes I went ahead and updated to 9.0 free. But AVG IS sneaky. They were sneaky first time I installed 8.5--a really convoluted way to get the free version---then it was enticing a person with free offers from partners if one got the 8.5 premium version as I recall. One had to go through a number of clicks and choices before the free version prsented.

    And see this message:

Avg Warning Message - Suggest A Fix PC Support Forums

AVG has been trying to trick people into paying for the upgraded new version upon a current version nearing expiration for quite some time now.

Marketing--whatever works I suppose. I think less highly of them now though.
