Astromenda virus

I did something bad. Somehow I downloaded the Astromenda virus that is installed in my Startups and has attached itself to Chrome. I uninstalled Chrome and reinstalled it. I tried to track it down and came up with the attached info. I finally found it in msconfig/Startup and unchecked it; it's still there in the Chrome address box. Your ideas and suggestions will be greatly appreciated. ellen

Hi ellenc,

Have you succeeded in removing Astromenda from your computer? If you would like, please follow the instructions below and I would be more than happy to ensure that all residual files have been found and removed.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
  • Right click to run as administrator (XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Select additions at the bottom
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will produce 2 logs, FRST.txt and Addition.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.
  • Please attach both logs generated.

Astromenda, con't

DonnaB... I can't thank you enough for your thoughtfulness in following up with my Astromenda problem. I followed your advice and used one of my spywares (Malwarebytes or Superantispyware, both of which do a great job and find different problems). It recognized a PUP for Astromenda and took it out! Neither problem has been used before to delete a PUP. Again, sincere thanks for your advice. ellen

Hi ellenc,

That is great news! Still, if you would like to spend the time to run the FRST scan that I requested above and provide the logs, it would be most beneficial to you to make sure that all of Astromenda was found. There is a possibility that malware could have installed that. I have seen a lot of that around lately.

Just looking out for your best interests. The choice is yours......

DonnaB...I tried repeatedly to download the Farbar you suggested, with no suceess. Norton kept blocking and REMOVING it as a security alert Norton doesn't seem to have a readily available request I spent a couple of hours today trying to find the case request site. Should I disable it and try to download Farbar again? Again, many thanks for your interest and help. ec

Yes. Please disable Norton for the moment, but whatever you do, DO NOT go venturing around in cyber space since you will be totally unprotected.
