    AVG8 Free Uses 1GB Memory

When I run a scan with AVG 8 Free it uses 1GB (!) of memory. What is bad is that when the scan is done that 1GB of memory is not released. The memory is only released if I reboot the computer. This also happens with Vista 64bit.

This scan is either just an ordinary scan of the whole harddisk or a scan of just some of the folders. I think memory may also be consumed by AVG 8 even when scanning just a single folder but I'm not sure of that. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Is there some way to get AVG to release the memory short of rebooting? Has anyone else seen this behavior?

    Using:
Seven 64bit (or Vista HP 64bit)
    4Gb main memory
    AVG 8 Free version

I've had pretty good success with Avast. I also had lots of resource hogging with AVG free or paid for. I am running a Laptop and Very high end tower on window 7 Build 7000 beta. All is fine so far.

    Hi zBobG,

Not sure AVG would normally do that. If there's something about your hardware/software configuration causing it to do that, switch to Avast, as jtoolman says.

Most of the regulars here use the free Home version of Avast and also on our Vista systems - it works very well. You need to register to get the free key and re-register every year - but that's no trouble.

Download FREE antivirus software - avast! Home Edition

    Hope it helps

I think you have a problem. I am using AVG internet security 8.xxx (full version) and while I was on this forum I started a scan. It used 2Mb of memory, then the memory was released after I stopped it. :)

Yes, I agree, I think it might be a problem with the AVG 8 Free version.

Anyone else have the AVG 8 Free version? Have you looked at your memory use before and after a scan?

Try Avast, it's low on system resources and it's good.

I have been using AVG Free version on both 32 & 64 bit machines with no problems. Each machine does a scan about midnight each night automatically. I have not seen any memory problems yet. Both machines are left turned-on 24/7 since install of Win7 build 7000.
