Apparently, the newer 1.0.1959.0 version is publicly available from the site now. Or probably from upgrading from the help menu of MSE.

Microsoft Security Essentials
Hi all
for those using Microsoft Forefront Client security (corporate slightly richer feature set than MSE although similar "Engine") then updates are available via standard Windows update.
Both products seem to work very well these days and are now highly regarded.
If you can't get Forefront Client Security then MSE is well worth installing -- very small footprint, almost zero cpu usage and real time protection which IMO is probably far more important than "After the fact" Virus detection - especially these days with a lot of "Rogue" and Bogus web sites attempting to do all sorts of "nasties" -- like filch your private data etc.
I'm of the old fashioned school that if a Virus has actually got on to my computer then I'm not even going to bother to attempt to clean it -- I'll "Zero" out the disk (binary zeros on every sector) and then restore a fresh CLEAN image -- I always backup every night and also have a reference CLEAN W7 image stored on non writable media as well.
Cheers
