    "Need Permission"


    I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate and trying to rename/delete a file in Program Files but no matter what I try I get the message "you need permission to perform this action....You need permission from (computer/username that I'm currently using) to make these changes".

    I've tried the Take Ownership right click option and it hasn't helped. I've tried setting permissions for the folder and the file from the Security tab, giving myself full control everywhere I can and taking ownership and still nothing. Also tried running explorer.exe as admin and no luck.

    This is seriously ticking me off about Windows 7, if anyone can help sort this out short of putting the drive in another OS would be really nice. Thanks. I searched for a solution but everything I've tried hasn't worked.

    have you tried deleting from safemode ?

    access safemode by pressing F8 on boot

    Thanks for the reply. No I haven't tried from safe mode and I've always been under the impression permissions still apply there. I'll give that a go if nothing else works but if I have to reboot I'd rather just boot into something else that doesn't have this ridiculously silly nonsense.

    I think this is incredibly stupid, what if a virus manages to set permission on itself like this and basically becomes protected. What's the point of Admin accounts if they don't have full permission. Sorry about the rant but if this keeps up Windows 7 can go ........

    Except you do not have administrative privileges until you elevate by accepting a UAC prompt. Understand? Now for a virus to get on your computer, you A) have to run it and accept the UAC prompt. B) Turn UAC off and become unprotected. AKA., run Windows XP. C) Change the permissions of all the files and folders giving you full access to everything where elevation is no longer required for the virus to infect your machine. AKA., run Windows XP.

    You DO NOT want to be running as a full admin all the time! While UAC is on, your account is equivalent to a standard user account. Unlike a standard user, you only need to click OK and not input credentials into the UAC prompt.

    Instead of messing with permissions for everything. Go to the file you want to change, take ownership of only that file. Then assign yourself only the permissions you require. And if possible revert the permission setting you've changed.

    And the virus will never be fully protected unless it severely destroys the permission system in Windows. But then it will no longer be protected huh?

    Uninstall the program, then you can delete the folder .... BTW, what is the name of the Program file?
