    Scans stop running when computer closes down.

    As above, my computer closes down after so many minutes being idle, and scans stop running. I started a scan last night and it went no-where overnight. What settings can I adjust to allow the scans to run when it closes down?

    Hi:

    A bit more information might help us to better help you.
    For example, what type of scan are you talking about -- perhaps a security program, such as your AV?

    Having said that, I'm not aware of any security application that will run/scan while the computer is "shut down" or asleep or hibernating.
    In other words, the computer needs to be awake in order for the security scan to run.

    Perhaps what you are really asking is: can the computer's power management settings be adjusted, so that the computer will not go to sleep or hibernate while a/an (antivirus) scan is running?

    Thanks,

    It was Windows Security Essentials, full scan.

    Thanks for the info.

    However, others will correct me if I am wrong, but I don't know of any anti-virus (including MSE) that will scan while the computer is shut down, asleep or hibernating.

    Are you trying to adjust the computer's power management/other settings, so that it will not go to sleep or into hibernation while an MSE scan is running?

    Or are you saying that the computer actually shuts down/powers off (IOW a thermal shutdown or some other hardware issue) during a scan?

    Thank you,

    EDIT:

    Is this the same computer as the one here: Microsoft Security Essentials Scan stalled. ?

    If so, the inability to install SP1 suggests serious issues with the system.

    <just saying>
