Tim, I basically mean you can buy an older version of Total Security (or any software product, like Internet Security) and migrate to the new one for free - it's Kaspersky's migration policy.

For example, I buy the 2013 version of Internet Security at £10 for 3 PCs for a year. Then, I migrate to the 2016 version for free, as per Kaspersky's migration policy.

Instead of paying around £40 for the 2016 version, I pay £10 for the 2013 version and upgrade for free, saving me £30.

I don't get the Bernie Sanders quote; as a Brit, I don't really follow American politics

This is essentially correct.

License support for Kaspersky consumer products is currently -1 to +3 versions.
Upgrading is always free within one's valid, unexpired license period.

So, for example, for KIS/KAV/KTS 2016, a valid legal license (e.g. purchased as a standalone from an authorized reseller, in a sealed box) would be good for the following versions: 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019
Many Kaspersky users prefer this method of licensing to "subscription" licensing, with all of its issues with auto-renewal.

In other words, a "good" KAV/KIS/KTS 2015 license can be used to activate or upgrade to KAV/KIS/KTS 2016.
(Each product has its own licensing, so a KAV license must be used for KAV, a KIS license for KIS, and so on. But there are ways to upgrade in place, for a fee.)

In fact, I just yesterday cleanly upgraded my main production desktop from KIS 2015 to KIS 2016, with 196 days remaining.

All of this is predicated on the fact that the license is valid and legal, of course.
KL does geo-restrict their licenses -- so a US license might not work in Asia, as an example.
And these rules may not apply in all geo-locales (because of piracy issues in certain parts of the world).

Well, regarding Bernie Sanders, you're not missing a thing...things are quite messy globally. I have friends in

England, and am acutely aware of the issues over there, as well.

notifies that network and router is vulnerable, due to obsolete firmware, yet we're running latest Netgear

firmware. And there's other issues, as well.
