Hi Art,
suggest you download and run Malwarbytes free, uncheck trial, and in the dashboard settings enable rootkits,

Hi,
I was infected too Not sure how. Kept on seeing instances of chromes.exe and chromedriver.exe appear in Task Manager. I don't have Chrome installed. Memory usage and CPU usage increased, not massively but noticeable.

Tried Kasperskey, F-Secure, Malwarebytes, Eset, MS Security Essentials. Still there undetected.
Tried Combifix - BINGO -Now gone - PC is slightly quicker and nothing stange in Processes
Waiting and watching

Well, you sure are lucky.

For the OP and anyone else who might read this thread:
Combofix is a very powerful tool designed for use ONLY by those trained to do so (or under their guidance).
It was never intended for use by computer users without such guidance and expertise.
You're lucky you didn't "brick" the system.
(For more about running Combofix, see here.)

Malware diagnosis and removal can be a lengthy, tedious process that requires the use of many specialized tools, in the correct sequence. Stubborn or difficult malware problems are probably best addressed with a bit of expert help, either here or any of several reputable computer disinfection fora.

Cheers,
MM

Hi,
Lucky? Maybe. Used correctly Combifix is a very good tool. I had tried every tool listed on Virustotal - they all declared the files as safe, Win7 even reported 'chromes.exe' as being Google Chrome (I've never installed Chrome) It was either a system re-install or Combifix - no contest. I have used Combifix before and was aware of the potential dangers. A couple of hours work or several days you choose.

No offence meant but for what it's worth I built (as in hand soldered everything) my first computer (ZX80) in the 70's. I've been building and servicing them ever since. I hope I've learnt something in the meantime.

Hi, @chrisrush:

No offense taken and likewise no offense intended.

Your experience shows that even experienced and advanced computer users/builders can become infected.
The OP in this thread and many others who might happen upon it may or may not be that experienced or expert.

That's why I clearly said:

Just trying to be "safe" for those who might lack the training to use such a powerful tool safely on their own. (As per the developer's intent.)

That is all,

Anyone try freefixer?

Great tool, shows all processes, registry startups, processes, etc., but whitelists/skips several known critical processes, gives you the option for which ones you wish to delete.
