A friend told me about this program called TurboFix. Ever heard of it? The fact that I can't see my post screen anymore is the biggest indicator that something is awry. He said TurboFix would allow me to access my BIOS and also the screen where you can choose safe mode, since now I can't because the computer takes me right to the login screen.

    Hi,
    Never heard of turbofix
Doubt I would use it either.

    Just disable fast start
Bios access depends on the manufacture
The tapping the Delete key on first startup or F2/ F12/ F8... ?

Tapping any of those keys does nothing, except keep the computer from starting. It's just all black now until the login screen.

It says that Windows Defender is turned off. How do I turn it back on?

    Hi,
Disable hibernation and see how it goes
Click Start and type in the search box
    cmd
Right click the suggestion and select Run as administrator
    Type in command prompt
    powercfg -h off
    Press the Enter key
    Then type
    exit
Then the Enter key and the cmd window will close.

If you want to enable hibernation use
    powercfg -h on
    Same as the other.

I just uninstalled MSE (using control panel/programs). Now I'll get Avast. Which of these checkboxes should I uncheck (see screenshot)?

    Hi,
I looked a couple youtube videos and indeed tapping the Delete key on startup should get you in the bios.

    Power off,
Disconnect the power from the wall outlet.
Hold down the power button for at least 60 seconds to drain any power in the board...

    Then plug it back in
Start tapping the Delete key as soon as you press the power button and key doing it.

Are you using a wireless keyboard ?

My buddy just came up with the solution. I was using my TV as the monitor and he said I should switch back to just the monitors. I did that and restarted and I was able to access the post screen prompts (BIOS, etc.). I chose Safe Mode with Networking so I'm back on the desktop in Safe Mode and now I'm going to install Avast. I posted a screenshot in my last comment of the Avast customize screen. Can you recommend which boxes to uncheck?

    Thanks

I just went ahead and Googled about this and followed the recommendations on this web article. Here's what I unchecked....

Ok...Avast is installed and when I go to register it, I get a pop up window that says "The AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error." I have no idea what this means. What do I do now?

So I just went ahead and tried to update Avast, and it started with "initializing", but now it's been stuck on initialing for the past 20 minutes.

O_o .... I keep hearing 'reformat, reformat' in the back of my mind.
