when i restarted my computer i had to force restart as i have a blank disk in the drive
Why did you have a blank disk in the drive?
Did you disinfect your USB drive?

    jacee

I think i am being paraniod to be honest. I most likely reinfected myself. The system has been running fine now for a couple of days. I am going to load all my software on (by downloading the software) and see how it goes over the next week or 2.

I have made up my mind to not touch the external hard drive until the vista machine has been disinfected. What ever is on that machine is nasty as no scan will locate it. Once I know what it is then we will have a better idea of how to get the data off.

thank you so much for your help.

thank you everyone for your help you have been great.

    cheers

just an update on the whole thing

all going well. I have reinstalled all my software on the seven machine all seems fine. I have also managed to install the operating system on the xp desktop. It was the modem stopping the installation.

vistas logs have been posted for disinfection.

Thanks again guys for all your help

    cheers

Ps. back to windows update installation

    Just a quick update.

I got the data off the hard drive and backed up on disk.

I first did a reg edit to prevent auto run
I made sure my system showed all hidden files and there full file names

I download the beeping computer disinfector - it didn't work on seven
I had the panda usb disinfector thing but that didn't work either with my external hard drive - wouldn't work.

when i plugged the drive in it installed drivers straight into my system - haaar

I did manage to copy and paste the files i need off the drive to dvd. It all seems to be ok

I then reformatted the external hard drive but there was still a file on there to do with recycling

I am currently using partition magic to wrip both drives just to put my mind at ease - It will be a quick reinstall this time as i made sure i took an system image before i even attempted to plug in the external hard drive.

thank you everyone who has given me help through this process.

    thanks again
