Problem with Avast Free version 4.8

My free trial of AVG 8 internet security ran out so i decided to try Avast free ( version 4.8 home) . AVG uninstalled surprisingly easily and Ccleaner did not find much residue.
Since installing Avast there is a distinct hesitation before pages open . I am sure that this can't be normal after all the glowing reports i have heard about Avast.
The on demand scanner in my right click menu also does not appear to work . I downloaded an avi movie, right clicked on the file and selected Avast scan, the Avast dialogue box appeared, sat on 0% scanned for a couple of seconds and then disappeared . I tried that a couple of times, with the same result.

    Any ideas, please.

    Edit . I am using Win 7 , 64 bit.

I'm assuming you tried to re-install it? Just gonna confirm it worked fine on my x64 install of build 7000. Also the lag in opening web pages is also very anomalous.

Did you try disabling the Web Shield engine to see if that affects the page loading performance? It shouldn't but if it does, then that's a start.

The right click action you describe is by design, it's a case of "no news is good news", if the item is infected you get all the bells and whistles, i can assure you

Thanks kindly for your replies. I have discovered that the right click scanning is only not working on my Desktop downloads folders. I have one for general downloads and one for uTorrent downloads. It works elsewhere but much slower than with AVG. Hopefully that is because it is much more thorough. : )

I should have mentioned that i have reinstalled it and also used the Windows' Run Maintenance Tasks' and Check for Performance issues.

The web page loading speed has now come good, so i will move my downloads folders off the desktop and hopefully live happily ever after.

    Thanks again for your replies.

Yeah, usually Avast doesn't really slow down anything. And sometimes the context menu individual scan is so fast that it just looks like it stays at zero and then disappears because it found no infection. Usually with a very large file, you will see it scanning for a bit.

If you check this box, it will show you the results of the individual scan after it has completed instead of disappearing.

Good onya , mate. I put the tick in and tried it again on the 697 mb avi, and the scanner showed its progress go from 0 % to 21%, it then stalled there for a while and went to 61%, stalled for a while and then went to 100%. I gave it another try aferwards and it now works fine.
It is not the first prog that i have installed in 7 that would not play nicely at first and came good later.

Great!, i didnt want to have to move those folders off the desktop.

    Thanks, mate.
