    My Account & Permissions

    Hi,

I just upgraded from XP to 7. I kept all my files in a different partition and started using them as soon as my Win7 copy was installed.

All my old files have a little lock in the icon which from what I understand means that I don't have the right permissions or rights to those files.

I looked it up and gave myself ownership of the files and allowed all the permissions, yet I still have that annoying lock and some issues like this one:

I installed a game and Win said that in order to run the game for the first time I need to be in an Admin. account - RRRRR MY ACCOUNT IS AN ADMIN ACCOUNT!

I don't want a quick solution, I want something permanent.

    1) How do I make my account the "supreme" admin account of my computer?
    2) I'm pretty sure that line 1 will solve all my permission problems, right?

    Thank you.

    Hi brosh and welcome

!-windows unlike Linux doesnt have SU. Even the built in admin account set up when win 7 is installed will not have permissions for 100% of items. To enable it
type cmd in search>type net user administrator /active:YES

2- Nope. there are files (and folders) that are locked (by trusted installer) because there is nothing to edit in them. Win 7 is different than XP and the security is better because of it

Thanks for the reply and the welcome.

But those are my files, shouldn't I be the one to choose if there is anything to edit in them?
    There are not system files.

So what's the solution for installing games and such?

Ultimately Yes. MS in its infinite wisdom decided we are to dumb to be allowed in those sybolic links. There are 3rd party apps that will defeat them, and you could take ownership of the entire drive.

Ms had to make security better so they gave us UAC (which most hate) and this lowest common denominator approach.

Do yourself a favor though, in you intend to play in those folders make a backup

    Good Luck

EDIT: what folders do you want to unlock???
