Installing MSE disables taskbar

Don't know if you've already tried this, but you could try installing MSE before you uninstall ZA. If everything's OK with both onboard and running, then it's probably the ZA uninstall causing the problem.

When I have problems like this, I use the built in uninstaller (and any extra uninstall tools the makers provide), then do a search through the registry and delete any and every reference to the product in question. There are usually quite a few even after what appears to be a complete uninstall.

Sorry - Richard and Jaycee. I didn't see your follow up messages before posting the last one.

Jaycee - I did check Windows Defender last night as I had read something about that and it is off. I've just gone through the services and process list and there doesn't seem to be anything still running from Zone Alarm.

I also just checked Windows Firewall and I don't see anything related to Miscrosoft Security on the list. Is that simply because I have it disabled at the moment?

Addendum - just figured out how to add Microsoft Security and allow it on the Windows Firewall. No immediate change so I will try a reboot.
