New Avast Beta 6.0.989

Information

How to install it
Just run the setup executable (links above). This version can be installed on top of your existing avast installation (4.x/5.x/6.x). Also if you are already running a previous build of avast 6, you can use the built-in program updater.

What's new in avast 6
Main changes/improvements:
- AutoSandbox – suspicious programs will be optionally run sandboxed
- avast! WebRep – browser plugin for website reputation rating; a combination of data from our virus lab and community voting
- Script Shield now even in the Free AV
- Site Blocking now even in the Free AV
- SafeZone – a special virtualized area for sensitive transactions (e.g. secure online banking) (paid products only)
- Restore factory settings command (Settings -> Troubleshooting)
- Automatic actions in the boot-time scan
- New compression method in the installer makes the setup packages about 20% smaller.
- Script Shield now functional even with IE8/IE9 Protected Mode
- Sidebar gadget
- Improved stability/compatibility of the Behavior Shield
- Improvements in the avast! sandbox

What's new in this beta build 986
pretty much all the bugs from the previous beta builds should be solved now, with the following exceptions:
- Firewall: uTorrent conflict not yet fully resolved
- Firewall: packet rules for applications still don't support ASK and AUTO-DECIDE actions properly.
- Incorrect context-menu handling in SafeZone
- Other small visual issues in SafeZone

What's new in this beta build 989
- improved update from v5.x (Security Center registration, installation of WebRep plugins, installation of the gadget, ...)
- improvements in the SafeZone (e.g. the Turn off command on 64-bit Windows, flash in the SafeZone browser , Alt+Tab processing etc)
- fixes in the gadget (especially on Vista)
- Welcome screen not shown by default anymore
- fixes in the Outlook plugin

Note: WebRep is currently available only for IE and Firefox (Chrome is coming soon

- improved installation/uninstallation of the gadget

Avast Final 6.0.1000 Released.

Changelog isn't posted just yet, but 6.0.1000 is confirmed final version, and is up on Download.com. You can get it here to do a clean install, or update from within the 5 version I believe.

And put an Avast monitor gadget on my desktop, lol.

Lets you open interface, or update. Can be made smaller, without the Avast logo. Interesting, but I'll stick to the system tray icon

Yep. And the only way to get rid of the desktop gadget is to either uninstall it through the Programs and Features - Avast-Change, or to not have it installed at the Custom installation screen of Avast.

The gadget will just reload after killing and re-enabling sidebar.exe or reboot onto the desktop even if you close it out, or uninstall from the Gadget Pane window.

It's location is in Program Files/Windows Sidebar/Shared Gadgets

Avast wants you playing in its sandbox

New security features designed to keep its more than 110 million users safe debut in Avast 6, released today exclusively from CNET Download.com. They also have the added benefit of raising the competitive bar in computer security by pushing more and better free options to users. Avast Free Antivirus 6, Avast Pro Antivirus 6, and Avast Internet Security 6 all feature the new AutoSandbox and the WebRep browser add-on. (Click the links to get to the download page.)

The debut of the AutoSandbox makes Avast the second antivirus to offer a sandboxing tool for free. Comodo introduced a sandboxing tool in January 2010. Avast's sandbox probably works differently, as Comodo has a pending patent on its version. And certainly, one of the most frustrating things about sandboxing technology is that there are some indications that it doesn't work perfectly.
All that being said, Avast's version automatically places programs into a virtualized state when it suspects them of being threats. It walls off suspicious programs, preventing them from potentially damaging your system while allowing them to run. Avast's sandbox allows the program to run, while keeping track of which files are opened, created, or renamed, and what it reads and writes from the Registry. Since permanent changes are virtualized, so when the process terminates itself, the system changes it made will evaporate.

we will soon be releasing a new program update of avast. And as usual, we're making it available for public testing a few days before the official release.

This is hopefully going to be a smooth service release, designed really just to fix some of the issues of the original v6.0.1000 build.

Here's the list of the most important changes:
- solved an incompatibility with ZoneAlarm (WinXP)
- improved installation of the WebRep plugins (especially Firefox)
- solved a crash condition in the avast sandbox
- setup programs now smaller by ~20%
- Community features and the Welcome screen can now be turned on/off directly from program settings
- solved an incompatibility with Outpost firewall
- solved a bug related to the AutoSandbox offer (WinXP)
- gadget can now be removed by simply closing it
- new setup icons
