Latest version of Avast Antivirus

The only problems that I have with Avast is that it drops my speed from 40mb/sec to 20mb/sec ..

Avast is copying Kaspersky's bad habits now. Very bad. I have not been affected by this new avast "issue" yet, but if i do im gonna change to norton IS 2010.

I have not had this problem so i cant play around with it to see if i can correct it.

But just out of interest you may want to try lowering the sensitivity or turning off the Heuristics scanning in Web shield & see if it makes a difference? :)

No problem. Don't ever have that problem either, my speed is the same with everything enabled, or with everything disabled.

Running Avast Free Antivirus v5.0.462, no problems/issues.
Same settings as the pic above.
Upgraded from 4.8.... to 5.0.447, 5.0.454, 5.0.460 then 5.0.462 in the last week.

SpeedTest.net is showing an average of .025 Mb/s slower with Webshield off.
No discernible difference.

My speed is slow (1.2 mbs on a good day) to begin with so I should be able to notice if there is a problem.

PingTest.net rating for line quality is 'A'.

When I was using Avast! 5 Free, I read in the forum that they recommend keeping the Web Shield's Heuristics Sensitivity at normal because it can/will slow down your internet speed.

This is just a thought, you have UAC disabled. Was it enabled when you installed Avast.
You could try turning it on & see if that works, it may be why you dont have the appropriate permissions.

Otherwise i would just download the latest installer to your desktop, uninstall Avast.

Then install the new version (preferably with UAC on even just at the minimum) then right click on your installer & Run as Adninistrator.

avast! Free Antivirus - Download Software for Virus Protection

View attachment 61273

Edit: The more i think about it, having UAC disabled you are not able to run elevated commands as an administrator,
You can only run commands as a logged on user. (Username/Adminstrator) is not a true Administrator account.
It is only a User account with more priviliges than a standard User account, so in turning UAC off as far as i can make out Username/Administrator only seems to have the privileges of a normal User account.

Well we can only wait & see if it works for you as to wether my theory is right or not

Actually when one has turned off UAC, it should have the same privileges as Hidden admin.
As there is nothing that will obstruct him and give him Standard User privileges token...

But try it, it may work. ;)

Yes this is what i thought would have been correct, but i just tried it again.

If i turn off UAC and restart, if i then try to run an elevated command prompt it is only a username command not an administrative command

I see by your edit that it did'nt work, oh well it was just a theory

The only other option i can think of other than reinstalling Avast is to enable the built in Administrator account, this will give you full privilleges like running XP

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/507-built-administrator-account-enable-disable.html

Sorry i could'nt be of more help :)

Avast V4 & Rising Internet

I tried V5 and had some issues with updating and security so I put V4.8 back on and have had no issues at all. In fact over 3 years now and no issues with it. It just works, and always has. But this is with My setup, If Avast V5 works for You, then Great! Also on my wife's desktop and our laptop i have installed "Rising Internet Security Suite", which is from a company in Beiijing China, it is quite good (it has more popup requestors than most, asking for confirmation) and no issues whatsoever since install of it either. We are on the PC daily for hours a day and on my PC I get approx. 200 downloads a week without probs.

I really like the new one, especially doing the registration during install from the GUI so it's less bother than email, but...

After years installing Avast on over a hundred machines with no issues or infections, my Dad got a fake virus scan Trojan which it could not get even in Boot scan. Neither could Malwarebytes or Spybot in Safe Mode which can flush viruses hiding in Memory after reboot.

But MSE got them all out from the desktop. I may be jumping the gun, but this along with MSE's near-invisibility once installed (no voice to turn off, no need for delayed start) has got me installing MSE now.

There is one install where MSE ran up CPU with no fix found, so I reverted to Avast and got to know it's new release a bit. I really like it and have put it back on my own laptop to compare with MSE on my other computers, after turning off the "voice" and delaying start.
