    i need people to vote

    hi all

i am at a friends place trying to get the data off my infected cd or dvds. We have had problems getting linux live cd to allow us to burn my data off the disk or to an external hard drive

my lovely friend built his rig 6 months ago. He now wants me to allow him to get the data of in windows.

he said it ok. I don't want him to do it. he is begging.

should i allow him to place my infected disks in his computer or should i take the same stance as i am at present that he is mad. Would you allow this to your computer?

help need some help convincing him no

    cheers

we have come to a compromise.

We will go ahead but after starting a full back up. my friend has extra hard drives. We will attach new ( well old) hard drive and reinstall windows on it. All is current drives will be disconnected and use this new /old drive to get the data off.

he is playing memory land of past hard drives. oh this was my first hard drive or i could use this drive. and he thinks it fun

The aim is i used a windows data back up after we have tranfer the data. Because when i got the hp i restored my data by going into the full back up and selecting and copying the files i needed and didn't have any weird virus thing for months.

    cheers

We never know anything about the poster, age etc. If you are both adults, explain to him the danger and that if things do not work out well, you do not want the friendship to end. If you are both young people. I would not let him or her do it.

When all this works out, remember, your firewall and a/v is not your first line of defense, you are. Surf with care.

Truly sorry to hear that. I know how it hurts, I had recent losses, too., He or she will always be with you. The good times, the laughs, etc they will be with you forever.

It's not necessary to be that extreme. Once you do what you need to do, scan his system completely with his antivirus and all is well. No big deal. His antivirus should prevent anything infected from being copied anyway.

Sorry yes it is - i have had 3 generations of windows with this - it is tricky - doesn't scan with any anti virus installed or online - tried them all ( the usb has been sent to avast) - the only reason i know it is a infection it by common behaviour over 3 computers. ( all different makes)

my friend has 3 internal one external hard drive. Plus we have a old hard drive (well he has every hard drive he ever owned) and a copy of windows vista retail.

My friend is supper happy about this - I wouldn't let him do it unless we back up everything on his system and was willing to do windows back up on dvd - even though he reckon it would take 150-200 dvd disks. (this is a rough guess with the amount of data)

so safer to using a extra hard drive and taking the time to set it up then
    infecting an existing system.

the hard drive has vista now installed. Now installing drivers that are needed.

After dinner we will work through a sequence of the disk that i think are not likely to be infected to the fully infected disks.

    all fun

    just told dinner time
