I'd say the lightest AV is no AV, but if you really need one AFAIR very light AV is Avira Personal Free also this AV has very good detection rate:

I would go with MSE. All things considered, this is probably your best choice. http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

    hi !

a-squared (a2) uses 620kB memory for realtime protection:

    https://www.sevenforums.com/system-security/56018-squared-uses-620kb-memory-realtime-protection.html

it seems to vary a little bit, depending on exactly what i´m doing,
1 hour ago it was 780kB, right now it´s 992kB.
but it stays below 1MB, doing it´s job in the background, can´t be much better can it ?

    userinterface ~11MB
scanning: ~110MB, might go up to 180MB

a-squared (a2) is also very good at detecting, and has received several awards.

I'm using NOD32 but i don't know if it's really the "lightest" Antivirus...

    On idle :
    GUI : 1 556K (1 632 K when the antivirus Window is open)
    KERNEL : 36 020K

While scanning system drive (Smart scan) :
    GUI : 2 996K to 3 248K
    KERNEL : MAX : ~55 000K -- AVR : ~41 000K
    Max UC (on Dual-core) : 48% -- AVG : 2-30%

The best is to try. If it's too much of a hugger, uninstall and try another one. The only thing with NOD32, is that it takes just a little more time to start the computer. ^_^ ...and it's not free.

I've using Microsoft Security Essentials on my HP netbook with Windows 7, and it's doing a great job. Excellent protection and no slowdown of the system.

I use MSE on an XP with 512MB of RAM and it's like having no Anti Virus on it and I have not had any Anti Virus on it for 2 years so I know what fast is.

The most lightweight and good AV for you is Avast 5 beta.

Clamwin is very light; unfortunately it's also bloody useless!
