My recommendation is that you try Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free (100%) and it's designed for Windows 7 and you'd be surprised just how much creativity and planning (and time), went into its development. It's very light-weight (which is probably surprising once you confirm this), and it's effective. It updated multiple times a day, and it's not too 'false positive' happy (though you will get the occassional 'better safe than sorry' messages, even when you know it's not a real infection. Anyways, check it out - I'm yet to have any of my friends regret their decision to actually listen to my advice...

Personally, I like to read through some AV testing results before making a decision. Obviously, personal experience means a lot. But I can say this much. MSFT Security Essentials is a decent product, but it has not fared well in AV tests against other similar products. Neither has AVG done that well, for that matter. See AV Comparatives Dot Org.

Out of the free products, I beleive Avast was the only one to win an Advanced Rating from that group. I can tell you from experience that Avast has a lot more features and from my own experience (as I download malware and test it all the time ( in virtual machines of course) ) Avast offers better protection.

But then again, I have not used MSFT Security Essentials for a few months. I tested it when it first came out. Thought it was alright, but was not that impressed. It may be a significantly better product now. But hell, since so many are free. Just download em all and test em out

I have experience with Avast (free version), BitDefender, and now MSE, and I can honestly say that Avast was good, but no better than any of the other freebies out there. BitDefender was not even Windows7 compatible when I decided to upgrade to 7, and given that I had a nearly 7 month license left on it, and that their customer service was absolutely non-supportive, I just dropped it and moved to MSE, and honestly, I've never looked back. Avast, as I said, was good - but it's bloated and the false positives are indicative of a somewhat 'unprofessional' coding. Not saying it's a bad thing, but it bothered me to no end. MSE is clean, streamlined and uses less resources than Avast (I know this), and AVG (from what I've read).

AVG was decent in its heyday (up until about 2007). Since then, it's been on a decline as it has become far too bloated and loves false positives way too much. Like omnimodis78 said, not a bad thing per se but it's annoying as all hell so I ditched it. I tried a few for a while, Avast, Avira, and although they seemed decent, they were a bit too resource intensive for my taste. Eventually, Microsoft Security Essentials was released and that did it for me. Great piece of software; lightweight, and did its job very well. Great anti-virus to use overall.

If you want a paid solution, you can never go wrong with Kaspersky. I've also tried Vipre from Sunbelt and their software is quite good in my view as well. Light and effective.
